In a democracy, it's actually good to hold the government to account. The government is the one in power. They're the ones who may affect who wins, who loses, who suffers, who thrives. They can lock you up. They can side with fascists or not. So, yes, pretty important to criticize them.

Canada passed a Digital Services Tax when Trudeau was still our PM. When the first payments came due, Trump whined and cut off trade talks and Carney rescinded the law. He just threw away $5.2 billion to appease Trump and the tech-bros who support him and his regime. Then tabled an austerity budget.

Anyone else want to put Tom Cotton on top of a capsized boat in international waters miles away from Venezuela and see how helpless he is?

As we experience another bad respiratory virus season, yet another study shows that Covid infections can dysregulate our immune systems. Public health leaders need to pay attention to this.

(** I block anyone who uses the term 'airborne AIDS'. It's both clearly not that & profoundly inappropriate.)

And, even if Carney loyalists trust him to only use this for good*, it establishes the practice for use by the Cons next time they're in power.

(* Yes, many are still this delusional)
Giving ministers the power to exempt pet projects from any law on the books except for the Criminal Code isn’t nation-building. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.
The fact that they‘re trying to sneak this through without any explanation is particularly incriminating.
Althia Raj: Mark Carney is quietly giving sweeping new powers to his ministers
Sneaking a change of this magnitude into a 600-page bill that will not get parliamentary scrutiny raises a red flag, Althia Raj writes.

Reminders, as public health officials warn of a very bad flu season:

🧵

* Washing hands is not a strategy for a respiratory virus. N95s, ventilation, air filtration -- especially in hospitals.

* We should have been cleaning indoor air with the same effort we put into cleaning drinking water.

Three things that a worker who has just experienced a violent incident need to hear:

1) Are you okay?
2) I’m so sorry that this happened to you.
3) What can I do to help?

You’ll note that “What did you do to cause this?” is not on this list.

Me, counselling someone.

We are going to have to get better at counselling young people with late stage cancer. We are going to see a lot more of this, as people don’t realise they are at risk, and to take symptoms seriously.

Sometimes diagnoses will be missed because we don’t expect them.

You might have sparked outbreaks and killed patients.

Trump has *always* intended to make Canada a vassal state. Trudeau warned as much when he said that the US wants our minerals into a hot mic.
But I don’t think it’s fully appreciated, not least by our PM, what exactly that implies: that US-Canada relations are now a zero-sum game.
Not the 51st state but a vassal state: What Donald Trump’s national security strategy envisions for Canada
Released Thursday, the 2025 National Security Strategy is also a window into the dramatic shift in America’s official world view under Trump.

This week, Trump quietly released his National Security Strategy.

It totally abandons the idea that we should stand up for freedom & human rights around the world.

Instead, it lectures our European allies & embraces authoritarian leaders who enrich the Trump family & their billionaire friends.
