Fire may have killed the goddess of Creation but the god of beneficial fire was not a part of that. Sanbō-Kōjin (三宝荒神) is god of the stove, of fire, hearth, and kitchen. He cleans away all impurities, watching the household. He can be male or female. #MythologyMonday
An irori, a traditional sunken Japanese hearth, showing an ashy-sandy lower level, surrounded by wood, with two pots of water in case the fire in the center gets out of hand. The kettle hangs from the ceiling, complete with decorative fish, and there are four interlocking tatami floor squares that presumably are somewhat flame retardant.
