Well versed in both the politics of dancing and the art of parties. Songwriter and vinyl bore. Wild #LFC fanatic and chant-crafter. Proud nephew to two beautiful uncles.
Well this has just annoyed the hell out of me...

10—U Got the Look

In his continuing attempt to corrupt sweet lass Sheena Easton, Prince delivers maybe his best duet, propelled by a Linn drum track and some wild percussion from Sheila E (no relation). Slammin'!

Telephone Call from Istanbul

Silence is one of the most powerful tools a songwriter has, and Waits uses it to great atmospheric effect on this staccato masterpiece. And the organ at the end proves he can use noise just as well

Only Shallow—My Bloody Valentine

In truth, I could have picked any track off this incredible album (except for Soon, which first released in 1990.) I've chosen its hypnotic opener, with a divine Bilinda vocal: one of her very best.

For #ArtistFaveLP this month I shall be dissecting what I believe to be the greatest double album ever recorded.

(Yes, it's even better than that one...)

Movin' on up—Primal Scream

As close as they ever got to capturing the Stones magic, with a vocal Mick would have killed. Yes it's been played to death, but never forget the way it made you feel that first time back in '91.

June Salutes You—Guided by Voices

'Hey! June salutes you!
From the fundamental champs
And Tammy and the Amps were singing…'

(And that's Kim Deal, lead singer of the Amps on the final refrain too.)

The Black Rider

With arch campness and a decidedly Brechtian flair, Waits delivers a brilliant cabaret performance on this title track, quite unlike anything he’d done before. Yet despite all this it unmistakably, irresistibly Waits.

Motorway to Roswell—Pixies

It's a lament about a crashlanding UFO, written to a batshit crazy rhyming scheme, so it's surprising just how emotionally resonant a song this is. Its glorious coda can reduce this human to tears.

Bingo!

Also re: the drain (your old post disappeared), the first pressing of the UK version included this unsightly drain just at the bottom of the pic below Lennon's foot.

All subsequent ones have a tighter crop (and it does look a tad neater.) It makes for a very handy way of IDing it

Okay, so I've never owned or, I think, played an Xbox. And I've never played this game before either. But my cousin raved about it in the pub and my gut tells me you'd love it:

(See if you can get a demo of it, because the price of a game is probably a lot to go in on on one of my 'hunches'…)
November 15, 2025 at 1:38 PM
Yep, mine's a first pressing: has the drain on the cover and everything. But it's not listed on the sleeve (which probably went to print beforehand)
November 15, 2025 at 1:04 PM
I just thought of that too, but I don't think you could call it a track. Also, while it's not mentioned on the sleeve, I notice it is listed on the label which might disqualify it entirely if we're working to a severe definition of 'hidden'.
November 15, 2025 at 11:18 AM
A question for #musicsky — was 'Her Majesty' on Abbey Road the first 'hidden track' ever released? I suspect it might be, because it happened by sheer chance, but I'd love to know if somebody had pulled the same trick off earlier.

1—Farmer in the City

It's about the brutal murder of Pier Paolo Pasolini, but you wouldn't need to know that to find this masterpiece affecting. Once heard, the haunting cattle-auction refrain never leaves you: Do I hear 21?

2—Duchess

One of the most beautiful songs he ever wrote, with Browning-flavoured lyrics that observe so lovingly, set to a sweet, delicate melody. But not so sweet that it can puncture the poignancy of his dying duchess.

16 Shells from a 30.6

Sparse and tight as a clothesline, with buckshot-ricochet percussion and a growled falsetto vocal that could whittle a man into kindling. A battlecry of a song.

Ol' 55

Cleverly, this isn't a song about a romantic conquest: we have loads of those already. Instead, it's set in the aftermath, with Waits driving home at 6am, basking in the post-coital glow as the sun comes up. Triumphant.

A Roller Skating Jam Named 'Saturday'
De La Soul

The wittiness of the sampling: the 'Saturday' from Chicago, the 'Roller skates' from Chic. Q-Tip drops in to ensure that first verse is a killer. And De La Soul are alive and kicking.

4—The old man's back again (4)

Only Scott could write a song for the neo-Stalinist regime and scat on it. (Ok, only him and Joni). But it is up to its lofty task: lyrically brilliant, musically assured. And what a bass line!

A sort of 'Shiver me Timbers' by way of 'In the Neighbourhood', Lucky Day had everything a great farewell song needs: nostalgic lyrics, a big sing-along chorus and a ton of personality.

Could be about journalism in the contemporary US, or the current scandal at the BBC. Like the album it comes from, still supremely relevant.

I love an opening track that throws you in the back of a car and drags you off on an adventure. Of course, it's only after you're in there J starts asking why you don't see him so much any more… A blast of a track
