You have described the common Elasticsearch condition. FWIW, I ended up writing my own Elastic client in Go using the HTTP REST api and gjson/sjson from Tidwall, because I hate their client library and, well, you figured out the JSON parsing problems, too.

To be clear, though, Mastodon isn’t meant to be a Twitter clone, while that is the distinct appeal of the Bluesky UI (even if the other goals are different).
