Our new start-up, "Gobble," delivers artisanal, free-range turkey by subscription! GAIL: Isn’t the little logo cute? MARK (cocky): We're disrupting gratitude. OWEN: It’s like the Uber of thankfulness! Elis stares at the phone in front of him, becoming increasingly annoyed. ELIS: You put a middleware layer on gratitude to take a vig. ELIS: And let me guess, your Series A is funded by "Pilgrim Hat Capital." ELIS: It's an AI-generated logo. ELIS: Do you people know me, like, at all? Chloe continues to hold up her phone for Elis, unperturbed by Elis' darkening mood. We can now see the mobile app logo on her screen; an AI-generated logo of a turkey wearing a pilgrim hat, smoking a corncob pipe and holding an assault rifle. Mark looks a bit ruffled, not by Elis' mood, but rather by the memory of his investors finding the hat to be controversial. MARK: ...It's "Pilgrim Venture Partners." Investors found the Hat to be... controversial. CHLOE (beaming): The AI said our logo needed more "rugged individualism." So we gave the turkey a pipe! ELIS (sarcastically, from out of panel): Sure. That makes sense. CHLOE (beaming): Isn't it great? Elis's face is a mask of existential hopelessness hidden behind a grimace meant to be a smile. Blood pours from his nose and ears and he has clenched his jaw so tightly that he has shattered his teeth. Next to him Layla looks calm and serene. Behind them on the wall is a family photo of Owen, Gail, Mark and Elis in front of the Vegas Sphere. Everyone but Elis looks like they're having a great time. Elis looks miserable. ELIS: Yes... ha ha! A million-dollar idea, in fact. Barren lies the soil of the spirit. Long is the winter of discontent. LAYLA: Ok, easy there John White... Pass me the gravy train.

The four paddlers on this raft aren't just fighting the waves; they're fighting to keep their livelihoods, and a piece of Hawaiʻi's food security, from being sent to the bottom of the sea. On the massive ship, the shipping container labels tell a familiar story: "Bail-Out Buckets," "Rubber Stamps," "Monopoly Money," and "Greased Palms." These critiques are a direct reflection of the systemic failures and cozy relationships that have led us to a breaking point. My latest cartoon attempts to capture the sheer, overwhelming force of the recently approved 25.75 percent Young Brothers rate hike and the grim situation this will force Hawaiʻi’s inter-island shippers, farmers, and consumers to navigate.

Panel 1: Elis and Layla stand in what's left of their driveway assembling a structure made of household items and furniture. The wind has picked up and is whipping their hair around as the fascist pothole continues to encroach on their house. ELIS: Are you sure this will work? LAYLA: In theory... fascist states are staffed by loyalists, not competent civil servants. It shouldn't be that hard to jam up its internal bureaucracy! ELIS: I meant the other part! Are you sure she'll come? PANEL 2: The city clerk, Brenda, appears in a poof of orange smoke, her hands posed like Dr. Strange. Layla and Elis drop to their knees as the ground beneath them begins to crumble. Layla points at the invading pothole to draw Brenda's attention to it. BRENDA: What's this? Is it an accessory dwelling unit, or a dump? Either way you are not zoned for this. LAYLA: We know! We've got bigger problems right now! BRENDA: Oh, for Pete's sake! PANEL 3: Brenda shouts down into the pothole while holding up a stack of forms in her left hand. Behind her, Layla and Elis hold on as the ground beneath them buckles and rumbles. The sign the pothole erected declaring its sovereignty is bent backward away from Brenda. BRENDA: This is an illegitimate declaration of sovereignty! You are in violation of city ordinance 21-03! I have here Form 12B-45, its supplement 12B-45/b, and a preliminary injunction against further gravel-based irredentism! ELIS: It’s working! LAYLA: It can't handle the paperwork! PANEL 4: The pothole has returned to normal, and Brenda supervises a contractor as he tamps down a new pitch of asphalt over it. Elis and Layla observe from afar while they assess the final situation. ELIS: Convoluted bureaucracy saves the day? LAYLA: "Save" is a strong word. It maintained its fragile stasis. It hasn't solved any problems; it is merely managing our decay. CONTRACTOR: That should hold for another six months. ELIS: Ah. So we filed for an extension.

In my latest editorial cartoon, federal prosecutor Alexander Silvert and State Rep. Della Belatti play our Mulder and Scully, prowling a darkened hallway in the Hawai‘i State Legislature searching for the truth: who is the mystery lawmaker the FBI observed accepting $35,000 in a paper bag? And why has no one been held accountable for accepting what is clearly a bribe or payoff of some sort? In a darkened office, this redacted lawmaker sits in the shadows, barely illuminated by the cherry of a lit cigar. Behind this shadowy figure is a row of filing cabinets. The lawmaker is seen running documents though a paper shredder. In another office, Senate President Kouchi floats, suspended in stasis within a green vat, symbolizing his absenteeism from the growing scandal. House Speaker Nakamura, meanwhile, trails our Scully and Mulder, dressed as a member of the Men in Black, a memory-eraser pen poised in her hand. Is her recently sent letters to the state AG and federal prosecutors really an attempt to help get to the truth? Or is it just a way to cover her ass as she points the pen at the public to make us forget? The truth is in here somewhere.

Layla and Elis stand in what's left of their driveway as the sentient pothole expands to consume their mailbox. The pavement under their feet is cracked. Elis is on the phone with the city clerk (Brenda), while Layla is staring at the hole, thinking. BRENDA (over the phone): A fissure of that size requires form 12B-45: Geopolitical Re-Absorption, notarized, and accompanied by three bids from licensed paving companies. ELIS: It's not just a fissure. It's a hostile regime! It's conscripting our mailbox! Elis and Layla sit in the office of the City Clerk, Brenda, who gestures toward an insanely convoluted flow chart on her wall labeled "Road Anomaly Resolution Process." Brenda has a perpetually underwhelmed expression of disappointment on her face. BRENDA: After submitting form 12B-45, the next step is a zoning review to ensure the pothole isn't part of an historic district. ELIS: By the time that's done, the pothole will have a seat on the security council and its own nuclear arsenal. Elis and Layla are once again standing in their driveway, having returned from the clerk's office. The pothole has erected a new sign that reads: "YOUR DRIVEWAY IS HISTORICALLY OUR GRAVEL. PREPARE FOR ANNEXATION." ELIS: Insanity! We're filling out forms while it rewrites the map! LAYLA: We need to attack its natural weakness as a fascist state... Elis and Layla look at one another while standing in the driveway. Elis has a curious look on his face while Layla looks like she has a plan. ELIS: ...A self-destructive desire for uniformity and purity within the composition of its asphalt? LAYLA: I like where your head's at Gramsci... LAYLA: But I had something a bit more Byzantine in mind.

A giant Kaiju designed to look like Shin Godzilla has come ashore in Waikiki. It has the JERA logo (Japanese fossil fuel company) on its body. On its shoulders, Hawaii Governor Josh Green rides along, waving a copy of the TIME magazine 100 Green Leaders issue, in which he was named a winner, like a battle flag and roaring along with the kaiju. Green recently penned a deal with JERA to shackle Hawaii to costly fossil fuels for another 20 years. The kaiju drips Liquid Natural Gas into the ocean, killing fish, as people on the shore flee in terror.

MONDAY: Elis and Layla are in their kitchen. Layla is looking out the window at the cul de sac, where a large pothole has expanded to swallow up a "children at play" sign. Elis is turned to face the reader, a befuddled look on his face. LAYLA: It's eating the "children at play" sign. ELIS: I think that's a violation of the Geneva Convention. Or at least the Homeowners' Association bylaws. TUESDAY: Layla and Elis are once again looking out the window, this time together. The pothole has now expanded to take up most of the cul de sac. A new sign has appeared at its edge with handwritten lettering that reads: "The People's Republic of Pothole - Now Accepting Tribute in Asphalt and Sand" ELIS: It's forming a government? It's a hole! It doesn't even have a tax base! LAYLA: It has a very aggressive foreign policy, too. I think it just annexed Mr. Henderson's Azaleas. WEDNESDAY: A high angle wide shot looking down at Layla and Elis as they stand outside their garage in what's left of their driveway. The pothole now consumes the entire cul de sac, a giant gaping hole that takes up the entire bottom 3/5ths of the panel. LAYLA: It's two feet from our geraniums. This is an escalation! ELIS: This is what happens when you defund public works! You get failed states in your storm drain! A medium shot of Elis and Layla outside their garage, standing at the edge of the pothole. Elis is frozen in a dramatic stance while Layla has her hands on her hips. ELIS: We need to call the city... A rogue aggressor is threatening our territorial integrity! LAYLA: I'll get the phone. You draft a strongly-worded letter to the U.N. ELIS: Really? Sarcasm? Right now?

Not a vending machine for the cultural equivalent of high-fructose corn syrup! Ben stands in profile, tablet still in his hands and eyes still glowing blue. From out of the iPad screen itself, a writhing mass of green tentacles has burst forth, engulfing Ben, wrapping its slithering appendages all around his arms, torso, neck and face. One tentacle has gone right into his slack-jawed mouth. THE ALGORITHM: MOOORE! MORE OF THE QUIET SADNESS! THE CONTENT MUST BE SMOOTH! IT MUST BE... PURÉED! Elis has been pulled away from his tablet by the tentacles, which are threatening to engulf him as well, wrapping around his arms and torso from behind. The tentacles have pried Elis' hands off his tablet. He screams with a look of fear, shock and a healthy amount of indignation on his face. Elis: You maniacs! Damn your brand-safe, sanitized drivel! You sacrificed my art at the altar of greed and summoned a horror from beyond the void! THE ALGORITHM: MORE QUANTIFIABLE DESPAIR!!!

He's still wearing nothing but red boxers and has a look of complete indifference on his face as he speaks: "The spud is pure. An unalienated projectile representing the proletariat seizing the means of propulsion; a symbolic act of resistance against the unearned authority of the land lord class. "My only regret is that his skull isn't a more fertile ground for new ideas." Layla also sits in the same dull room, her work gloves resting on the table in front of her, nonchalantly examining her nails as she speaks: "Nothing more than a simple case of imprecise crop rotation. "The soil was too acidic for meaningful discourse." The one interviewing them is revealed as a detective version of Mr. Potato Head, who stands on the table in front of placard with his title and name. Behind him on the wall are Most Wanted Posters, one of which is a mime with a $50,000 reward on his head. Det. Mr. Potato Head points at them all accusingly with his left hand as he slams his briefcase shut with his right. His face is arranged in a glare as he speaks: "That's it! I'm done! You're all mashed! "This case has too many eyes! I can't get to the root of it!"

Big ’ol dang ’ol mooooooooooooon
Full moon behind sparse foliage over a ranch style house. It's lighting up the night sky! Same scene except my hand slipped so the lights from the house as well as the moon are starting to blur in an upward motion. The upward blurring of the scene accelerates even more and looks wavy now. The entire scene is now a diagonal streak of lights and shadows.

Panel 1 Elis burst through the door of his home, kicking it open with a BANG! He is covered in grayish goop that sprays everywhere as he shouts: Apparently my "ideological bandwidth" creates a "Friction-Rich User Experience!" I'll give her friction! In the foreground, a new character, Layla, concentrates on dropping a pink liquid into the toothy mouth of a carnivorous flower a la Little Shop of Horrors. Layla is attractive, with a cascade of dark curls framing her large eyes and light brown complexion. She wears work overalls and heavy duty work gloves and has safety glasses on. Without looking up or reacting at all, she simply says, "I just mopped." Panel 2 Layla turns to Elis and says: You can't keep coming home covered in corporate residue. If I wanted to clean up the extracted surplus value of compromised artistry, I'd go work at a gallery. Elis, as if realizing for the first time he is tracking goop everywhere, looks sheepish as he replies: Oops! Sorry, Layla. Panel 3 Layla is suddenly behind Elis, with a mischievous grin as she says: You're forgiven for trying to create meaningful art in the face of a relentless, unfeeling, capitalist machine whose sole purpose is to strip-mine meaning and sell it back to us as a subscription service. A fundamentally tragic endeavor. Elis has a half-dazed half-sickly look on his face as he processes what she just said. He weakly responds, "Uh. Yeah..." Layla follows up: Now take off your clothes. You're getting goop everywhere. I'll prep the device... Panel 4 Elis stands in the backyard wearing nothing but red boxers. His hair is damp and the goop is gone. On his shoulder is an expertly built DIY potato launcher, the Spudzooka. Elis has just launched a spud with a THWUMP! He says: Nothing life backyard agrarian projectile therapy to reassert your humanity! Behind him stands Layla, a recently-used garden hose in one hand as she shades her eyes with the other to follow the trajectory of the launched spud. She says: Watch the arc on that spud. We want to avoid an international incident.

The lei the Israeli officials are handing the Hawai`i lawmakers though are lei made of bullets—bandoliers. Rep Diamond Garcia (R), minority house leader, leads the delegation and has a bandolier around his neck already while the other reps eagerly wait their turn. They seem to be oblivious or uncaring to the fact that, by accepting the bandolier—by accepting the trip—they are now tools for the Israeli government to further its genocidal aim. They are now directly complicit in its atrocities. Behind them, on a wall, a giant poster of Bibi Netanyahu greets them with "Shalom! Aloha!" Bibi looks grim and has his hands raised almost maniacally. The brim of Garcia's cap covers Bibi's upper lip area just so that it evokes Hitler's tiny mustache.
