I ignored the claim that they owe 223000 now. It is possible for something like that to happen but it requires for the borrower to be paying less than the monthly interest accrued. And I just don't think it is a reasonable thing to complain about owing someone 109000, and paying less than 500/mnth

but also isn't working either for a non-profit or a government agency. (because they could have gotten public service loan forgiveness 10 years ago if they were)

Even if there were no interest on the loans, minimum payment to pay it off in 10 years would be $908 a month. So the government is giving them a pretty big break.

And also, somehow, this person is a lawyer who's making relatively shitty money for a lawyer (~80k, assuming no kids)

(assuming they're making the payments) regardless of the balance. Google tells me that fed. student loans taken out in 2005 would have interest rates of 6.1% (since its law school specifically, I'm assuming that is a PLUS loan). All fed. student loans are amortized for 10 years of repayment

OP doesn't give enough info to make exact calculations, but assuming they've been paying about the same amount for the entire time, they've had these loans for about 20 years, which if they are government loans, means they're on a income based plan, and the loans will be forgiven in about 5 years

It seems that the trend here is that reading the book (or claiming to have read the book) actually tends to make you worse at ferreting out the books that weren't set in that period.

my internal monologue whenever I hear "We cannot solve the climate crisis without dismantling capitalism" or the like, is always "Oh, okay, so we're not solving the climate crisis. Got it."

Skeets claims that a circuit split develops in 2086 about time travelers' torts, but as of now, Sloan v. Holt (1944) is pretty clear that Cosmic Boy doesn't have standing.

In Pathfinder lore, there's a city, Daggermark, that has an assassin guild, and much like going to a barber's college for a cheap haircut, citizens can, once a year, hire a student assassin from the guild at a steep discount.
