West End: It’s where all the good food is, but the tourism lists won’t go. It’s where the schools are criminally overcrowded, but ACPS couldn’t possibly inconvenience wealthier whiter public schools to make things fair. It’s also not just one neighborhood.
We aren’t encouraging support toward any one candidate because that’s not what this account is for, but we will share and highlight when West End issues are discussed.
West end best end?? Loving this substack thing—so many thoughts, so little space in these BlueSky posts.

Join me for another deep dive, this time to discuss the future of the west end and therefore our city.

Per the GoFundMe: His family sought safety in the US. He was walking on the sidewalk with friends when a speeding driver left the roadway and hit him.

And people still show up at public meetings acting like our traffic violence epidemic is a non-issue. Infuriating

This is horrifying. We are praying for this west end family and fighting for the ability of our community to safely move about our neighborhoods.
WUSA9 spoke with the teen's family this week. They said he is currently on life support and in a medically induced coma after being resuscitated by doctors.

A GoFundMe for the family created by his cousin has raised $19K out of a $24K goal.

We are so tired over here of our kids and elders and everyone else not being able to walk, bike, scoot, or exist outside without risking being hit by cars on unsafe streets that prioritize traffic speed over our lives.

Praying for this young one.

Question for local elections experts:

Is there a deadline to register to vote for the February 10 special election? We got the question from a west end teen who will be turning 18 soon.

There‘s a primary today, Alexandria. In the west end, you can vote at Beatley library From 8:30-7 today. It’s a very short turnaround, so you’ll have to do your own research on the candidates (there are 4). Make sure you make your vote count.

We’re not here for the followers count but ain’t it funny that not a one school board member that “represents” the west end follows this account of west end parents? Maybe they not on here but how come the only board member following this account is from del ray?

ACPS finally sent notice to families who are being redistricted this morning. Group texts of multilingual working class West End parents are blowing up with questions and confusion about these messages because ACPS and the school board completely failed to actually engage with these communities.

At what point do we clean house at ACPS CO when it comes to leadership? Transportation, Facilities, so many clear problems.

Meanwhile schools have had unresolved and sometimes dangerous facilities problems drag on unresolved for months and months.

There is nothing more beautiful than seeing West End Alexandrians out and about in golden hour in the fall, especially on the Holmes run trail.

Did ACPS change its logo again? How much of our tax dollars went to that from our “fiscally responsible” central office?

Coming to the West End.

Bring your questions, West End parents.
ASK US ANYTHING (about the City of Alexandria).

The Alexandria City Council is hosting another town hall on Saturday, Oct 4, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Patrick Henry Rec. Center. Submit your questions in advance or write them on the day - either way, we want to answer your burning questions!

Update: supposedly there is finally toner at least for now, and also that it’s an issue at *multiple* schools. ACPS leadership needs to resolve this in a lasting way and the school board should stay on top of them about it.
For further context, we’re hearing from PHK8 parents that there’s no toner at the school and only one functioning copier so students aren’t getting homework because they can’t print or copy.Where is CO and the school board when a school’s got no toner in the first month of school?
Hey ACPS parents, how many functioning copiers does you kid’s elementary school have?

West End parents are trying to figure out something.

A school board member said ACPS doesn’t have a problem with transportation.

Have they EVER spoken to a parent?

And didn’t they repeatedly say that transportation was a problem that meant West End overcrowding couldn’t be solved?

Time to recruit school board candidates.

It’s a new school year but the same old ACPS leadership playbook that continues to demand a blank check with no accountability. No problems ever actually solved.

Will the school board do its job this year?

I’m not holding my breath

It’s back to school so it’s a good time to support a west end teacher or two. Here’s a 🧵 with Donors Choose links for teachers at west end ALX schools. 👇

This west end parent was taking a break from social media and trying to stay sane over the summer.

How are we feeling West End parents? Ready for school? Attacked by the aggressive ParentSquare barrage this week? Do your kids even have a teacher this year?

It’s so nice to see that they are putting in a board that reflects our city. 🙄

Shall we start bets now on whether any program panels will include young people, non-native English speakers, renters, condo dwellers, bus riders, or anyone making under 6 figures?
