Peru became the world leader in recall referendums. What drove it—and what did it do to democracy? Beyond innovation: power games!

Between 1997 and 2013, more than 5000 recall referendums were activated against democratically elected authorities from 747 Peruvian municipalities (45.5% of all municipalities). This makes Peru th...

Spaniards, Franco is dead.
Fifty years.

It’s that simple:
A government of the rich legislates for the rich.
A government of the corrupt steals.
A government of extremists persecutes anyone who doesn’t resemble them.

Power acts according to who holds it.
That’s why it must be occupied.

I’m glad to take part in the round table “From Page to Screen: One Hundred Years of Solitude.” It will be a pleasure to discuss how García Márquez’s masterpiece has been reimagined for contemporary audiences.

🎧 What to do in times of democracy decline?
Mainstream narratives focus so narrowly on the rise of the far right, yet reality is more fluid. There’s still plenty of room for political dialogue and collective action. Not easy, but worth trying! We talk about this @unrisd.org 👇

Why not consider a slightly more complex voting system, one that allows citizens to indicate:
1) their favorite candidate ✅
2) the one they most reject, ❎ and
3) a second preference ✅
Such a system could generate radically different incentives for the political arena.
Which rules do you prefer, and why?
Institutions really matter!
If there were no 2º round in Chile, Jara (a communist) would win. Since there is a 2º round, the one with the best chances is whoever comes in second from the right.

The POPGOV project argues that while modern representative government – which is characterised by regular elections and independent representatives – has become the main alternative to authoritarianism, it often serves to empower a narrow group of elites above others.

The Nobel Prize in Economics very often goes to scholars talking about inclusive institutions and equality... but they belong to a very exclusive elite of US-based academics. This is a systemic problem. The system is washing its conscience.
