Oak Tree Feeding. The oak has a name for each of its hungers. Crawling devourer. Mouthless, soaring under the summer moon. (Luna moth). Strange sunless cousin that bores in roots and befriends mushrooms. (Bear corn). Immune riddle that once wrote many stories. (Oak gall wasp). Thousands of names stack up in the oak's long memory and each one beats out a wisdom born by deep roots and thousands of suns: to eat is to feed, to survive is to be more than one, to be alive is to be many. So, when a single child goes hungry, it is as if we have forgotten our own name.

It is easy to feel lost in such times. Society crumbles away beneath us. But everywhere I see those building the world we want to live in. Feeding the hungry. Housing the homeless. Protecting creatures no one else even notices. Fighting fiercely for lands others would trade for pennies. We don’t need to find a better world. It is already here.

That is our purpose, I think, as writers, as artists, as wanderers and waylarks right now. We feed on these dark times. We point to safe refuges in the dark of fertile soil. Then, we herald light’s return.
