I will be on site Tuesday, November 11, 2-5pm and Friday, November 14, 2-5pm. Come talk to me!

Made it to Ben Shahn's retrospective exhibit "On Non-Conformity" at the Jewish Museum in NYC. Very timely. And well-curated with historical documents, printed materials and some of his reference images. Closes Sunday, October 26. There's a book if you miss the show.

Friese Undine’s new exhibition is slyly, hysterically, funny. Cults of historical re-enactors, cannibals and naturists nostalgically jostle elbows with historical figures who may be different than we expect. At @thomasvandykegallery, Sunset Park Brooklyn, 434 39th Street, Thu-Sun, 1-6pm. Thru Nov. 7

Famously, AI systems crunch text and images based on the datasets that humans feed them. To create this work, rather than using AI, I fed myself a dataset of images of dead men in iconic European paintings. The naked and clothed male body is a complicated signifier. The images carry the content.

I’m loving this beautiful zine put out by @worcesterportraitexchange from their recent event at JMAC in MA. Exchanging portraits seems to hold out the possibility of a utopian solution to the fraught ethics of visual representation. It’s not a perfect form, but it is so inspiring. Excellent!

Facial recognition systems use different math techniques but an interesting one, visually speaking, is Eigenfaces, first used by computer scientists in 1991 to classify faces by using a system of vector math that reduced differences in facial characteristics to allow for quicker processing.

For fifteen years, as I’ve commuted to work and lived my life, I’ve gone down into my subway stop in Brooklyn and come back up latet. This is a portrait of the cameras that watch me. I see them, and they see me. Somewhere there are people watching. Somewhere there is an archive of my travels.

I just reread Hito Steyerl’s 2017 “Duty Free Art: Art in the Age of Planetary Civil War.” Still provocative. Göbekli Tepe, neural networks, “suicide cameras” mounted on missiles, art storage in extra-national freeports, Wikileaks, Hans Holbein paintings, game theory, and more. Thx for the tip, Dan.

I’ve been thinking about the ways that artists and writers connect and how that becomes apparent in archival materials. I knew about the connection between Beauford Delaney and James Baldwin but I didn’t realize that he also had a decades-long friendship with Henry Miller. All very satisfying.
