Me: it’s not PJO!

Also me: hey what if a sarcastic daredevil with black hair and daddy issues fell for a very smart blonde girl?

“What if your deadbeat absentee dad was a god?” —> “What if you as an adult had to try and make right all the things your predecessors with godlike power fucked up while ensuring you don’t fall into the same traps?”

I’m not saying The Godreaper Rebellion is for adult fans of PJO but it is for adult fans of PJO who liked those books because they were neurodivergent weird kids who thought a lot about religion, politics, society, and/or boats.

Mexico Versus Nazis is a theme that’s really resonating with me of late

One thing I really like about The Broken Earth series is it explores this question and says “hey, even if minorities *could* blow up a town with their minds, it wouldn’t excuse treating them as inhuman.”

It’s important to have escapist books, but I want to believe queer epic fantasy can be a place where we grapple with the history and the systems that created the world we live in.

While I’m happy to see cozy fantasy and romantasy drawing people into the genre, Skullrunner is not what I would call an escapist book—rather, it’s a book heavily inspired by the world of 250 years ago, and the world we live in now. It’s a story about revolution, and why some resist it.
