Prologue: Flotsam On Upailit, in the lands of the Six Brother Clans. 17th Iunosmonth, Year Seventeen of the Golden Republic. The Soladiseans say we should be reconciled to one another. They say both our peoples came to the Seaward Isles from far away, and, as we both cannot leave, we must share the land and the waters. Here is what we say: the great currents that flow between the stars and seas lead our ancestors to the Seaward Isles as a gift of trust. The ancestors of the Soladiseans did such evil that they choked off the spirit currents and poisoned the seas to make the Isles submit to their will. By no means can a thinking people be reconciled to this depravity, not without a great making of amends, and the Soladiseans who speak of reconciliation make nothing but noise. When they say ‘reconcile,’ they ask us to forget. We cannot forget. But, to their people, forgetting is the greatest pleasure. –‘Our History of the Golden Republic,’ published in The Dawn Beacon. A wave washed across a beach of brown silt and reeds and set a half-drowned woman on the shore. Cevette Zarcanzi rolled onto her front and spat out a mouthful of brackish water. Her head spun. Her muscles ached. She pushed herself up onto her knees, sinking a half-inch deeper in the silty soil whenever she moved, and looked about her. Where am I? Rolling hills rose in the distance, gray clouds descending on them like a cloak. Pine trees covered their slopes. Reeds and cattails covered the shore in faded green. A small flock of pied ducks were plucking mussels off a rock. The air smelled of smoke.

*We* are also overworked and lack resources. We have ideas. We advocate for ourselves. And far too many marginalized authors, instead of getting the support they deserve, get labeled as troublemakers or drama queens and dropped for their next book
We are up against the fact that many of these employees are overworked and not resourced enough. Make it easy for them to say yes to you. Come up with your own ideas. Treat your author career like a business, even with traditional pub. Be your own advocate. You do that and, eventually, you will get that huge support because you will have the readership you need.

Bringing this over from Threads, because—like, what? I pushed my publishers for YEARS. I sent the emails. I followed up. I scheduled my own events and set up my own pre-order campaigns. But without their efforts to complement mine, it got nowhere
I see a lot of authors on here begrudging that publishers do a lot of support for some books, but not much for others. And I get it because that’s demoralizing. But I’d love to encourage authors to be a little pushy in making sure your book gets supported. Send the emails. Do the follow ups. Make your own connections. I’m doing a pre-order campaign with a local bookstore because I emailed them and asked for it. Don’t wait around. I did that with my first novel and I regret it.

Today, the characters in my sapphic pirate book meet a rogue mutual aid organization covered in tattoos that counteract the government’s memory-altering magic
“What does your revolution do now?” Tomis asked Thimmely. “Well, our resources are quite limited. There is little we can do effectively. But, what we do have, we share with those most affected by the Republic’s failures of governance.” “So you’re a charitable endeavor?” the journalist asked. Thimmely shook his head. “Charities are beholden to their wealthy patrons. They make large, visible gestures to gain the sympathy of the public. They do very little of the lasting, needed work. We dig trenches and raise foundations in flooded fields. We erect palisades and insure crops near abomination blooms. It’s a hard life, not in the least because Gavon has made a number of quite powerful sacrifices to target us, but if we follow our tattoos, we can hold together.” “Why do you choose to follow the tattoos?” Eva said. “Because that means going up against the Republic itself.” Thimmely smiled. “It’s never been the Republic that’s looked out for me when I needed help most. It’s always been the victims of its cruelty, standing together.”

Her fair skin weathered and ruddy, her face heart-shaped face and her short blonde hair chopped like straw, Cevette Zarcanzi frowned from behind a smoking pistol. Eva knew her on sight; the printed illustrations in the papers had captured her well. The pirate wore the stolen orange uniform of a soldier and held herself with all the gravity of the burning moon. She drew a second pistol from her belt and pointed it at Eva’s head. “You. Don’t move.” Eva froze.

I’m Vyvre and I write epic fantasy with queer characters! This is from my sapphic pirates book and I like how my MC has a lil’ Autistic Moment thinking about her love of boats while a rival pirate ship is firing on her
Eva tested the door. “Locked,” she said. Cevette dug a coil of rope out from the chest and began tying it to the bars of her cell door. “We’ll have to climb,” she said. “One moment. Let me secure the knot.” Eva ran to the hole in the wall and peered out. A warship had entered the harbor. She was as large as any in the commander’s fleet, her sails black as midnight, her flag a silver skull. Its cannons flashed. Glowing orange shells streaked through the night. Dust flew up wherever they struck the walls. The fortress trembled. “Oh, she’s powerful,” Eva said. She blinked, then squinted, trying to get a better look. She stretched her hand out, as if the ship was a model she could pick up and hold. She should’ve been terrified. Neither her body nor her mind was delivering terror. She so liked looking at boats. “She’s not yours, is she? That’s a ship-of-the-line. I read your ship was only a barque.”

A small smile crept across Eva’s face. “Thank you for coming along.” “But of course.” Why didn’t you run with the others? she almost said. But she didn’t think she could stomach hearing the most likely answer: I look after my crew. She should be happy to have such an honorable captain. It was only that she wanted to matter more to Cevette than another sailor of the crew. She wanted to be at the center of her captain’s heart.

He’s cruel. He’s truly cruel. Eva smiled. The whirlwind in her chest settled. She drew a deep, full breath. Her chest pushed against the diary hidden in her bodice. She tilted back her head and closed her eyes, basking in the light of the moment. A soldier took her by the arm and led her to the door. She went, unresisting. Her heart fluttered. She knew she had a right to be angry now.

“Easy there,” Cevette whispered from below. “Let go. It’s a short drop.” Eva took a deep breath. She grabbed the rope with her left hand and unwound it from her right. Trust her. Trust her. She let go. Gravity snatched her down—and then firm arms caught her. “Well done,” Cevette said as she set her down on her feet. Her hand lingered on Eva’s waist. She might have said something more, but she was cut off by a piercing scream.

Eva shuddered. She knew little about the mechanics of this place. The gods of Soladis had once told their people that Death was merely a resting place for souls before they moved on to their next life. But there was clearly more to it than she’d been told. Her chest tightened. She took a deep breath. Her skin crawled at the cool sensation of breathing air that was not quite air. What is this place, truly? Perhaps a philosopher could tell her. But here, she could only ask that question of herself.

It looked like a newspaper that had gotten wet and dried in a clump, though it felt strangely dense in her hand. The ink on the surface had blurred together, making it quite hard to read. She did see Evazina Gavon printed on one line and the tunnels printed a bit further down. “Fascinating.” Lovett tilted his head to the side. “A memory.”

Eva ground her teeth together. Her stomach churned. The gods were tyrants. They had taxed their followers into poverty and forced them to fight in bloody wars. Whoever dared defy them had been burnt as an offering. This was justice. Justice mattered. The commander’s hands rested on his pistols as he approached the helpless god; his weathered brow was furrowed in concentration. Hardly the tallest or broadest of men, long-faced and pale, his eyes as dark as night, he held himself as tautly as a snake about to strike. “Hello again, Skullrunner,” he said as he ground his boot into her neck. “Is that all the fight you’ve got left? How disappointing.”

Andreas handed Eva a parcel. She ripped through the crinkly brown paper and pulled out a ring as heavy as lead, topped with a silver skull that had a small hinge on its side. She pushed the skull back. Beneath it lay the revolving chamber of the smallest gun she’d ever seen. “I adore it.” Grinning like a gambler with an ace up her sleeve, Eva slid it on her left hand and tested the hidden trigger with her thumb. It would take at least five minutes to reload, it would bounce off any target more than ten feet away, and she wasn’t even that good a shot—it was the twin knives she’d worked for years to master, the ones her trainers locked away after practice. But it was something she could hide. Some small protection.

Eva took a step toward Cevette. Her boot touched a small, framed portrait. It must have fallen off one of the messy piles. She picked it up. “No! It’s not you!” But it was. A hand-sketched portrait of a woman with a long face and thin cheeks, dark hair and a soft smile. Cevette’s signature lay in the corner. Eva pressed a hand to her mouth. Heat flooded her cheeks. The back of her neck prickled. Cevette had drawn her with the gentleness of a lover. She had never felt more beautiful. More wanted.

Zeke was the first man to cross. Clad in his orange uniform jacket and the violet beret of a Godreaper, he strode over the plank bridge with a quick, well-practiced military gait and nodded to Moira. “Your Grace,” he said, his courtesy unfailing even as the panther-lizard abomination sniffed at his knee. “My pleasure.” He marched past her and approached the mast. “Eva,” he grunted. His shadow loomed over her. He reached for her hand, then hesitated. “Did they hurt you?” “They were fair enough, all things considered. At least when they turned against me, I knew them only as fellow travelers on the sea, and not my closest friend of many years.”

Warmth glowed on her eyes. “Thank you. Thank you. By the gods, Eva, you’re the most audacious woman I’ve ever met.”
