A historical note for people who want examples - "female husband" was a term used in the 18th century. Fielding wrote about a widely publicized example in 1746. Wikipedia has 8 known people under this entry from 1680-1829, so imagine how many more were never found out and just lived their lives.

WLRH already doomed itself to extinction by dropping NPR. We were regular donors, even gave them a car. Now we listen to NPR on other stations and never tune in. I raised a kid on PBS - we never had cable. APT can't fill the void if they abandon PBS.

My father controlled the TV (we called him the "entertainment despot") and we didn't have cable, so I read constantly as a kid. I hope W will find something that lights that urge to read. My kid (24) rarely reads mainstream books but consumes a ton of fan fiction (and writes it, as well).

That's so sad. Reading is one of life's great pleasures. I know smart phones and the internet and the 24/7 dumpster fire of "interesting times" all conspire against our attention spans, but it's not like you're asking them to read the unabridged CLARISSA.
