Thank you so much, this is really helpful to me because I am a Fixer, my first instinct is to talk or do more in the hopes of fixing things. But you're so right, not responding to everything is absolutely going to be the better option here.

What breaks my brain is that these fanfic readers aren't condemning the canon creators, but they are condemning fic authors *for the exact same thing*.

Like they aren't saying eg the creators of Hannibal are romanticising murder/abuse, but they *are* saying that about Hannibal fic writers.

Not all fic is plotless fluff and/or porn. Much of it is incredibly plotty and complex and well written. Including having characters who occasionally do bad things.

I've seen people comment "why would you even *want* to write [sexism/racism/ableism/whatever] if you aren’t [sexist/racist/ableist/whatever] yourself, huh?" about stuff that is literally as bad if not worse in the original canon.

And the answer is BECAUSE THAT'S HOW ANTAGONISTS WORK.

It can even be a character who behaves badly in the original canon. And somehow we are all okay with the original canon and don't think the people who made it are evil, but if a fic author writes similar in their fic it must be secret wish fulfillment proving they are a Bad Person 🙃
