How was the distance-learning experience? I did PennState's undergrad weather forecasting certificate a couple years ago. One of these days, it'd be great to get a proper EC/NWS-compliant Met program under my belt though. 🌦️🧑‍🎓

It started again here, but it's not as heavy. The snow band has narrowed a bit and shifted slightly south, so maybe we'll be done with it soon-ish 🤷

I've shoveled for Moxie and Charlie four times already. The kids have been out to pee without leashes because, well, where are they going to go?! About 30cm down and still snowing, though it's beginning to lighten up...maybe...? 🤞

We've far surpassed the "It's safe to let the chihuahuas go outdoors without a leash--they ain't gonna run away!" threshold.
December 12, 2025 at 2:29 PM
That was 2 hours ago. It's still accumulating. We'll probably close in on 30cm by midday at this rate--doesn't look like the squall is breaking down anytime soon.

Northwesterlies off the Bay that blow perpendicular to the "north mountain" also have a habit of dumping snow on those of us at northern edge of the valley floor while sparing the highway 1/101 corridor. Tends to be more of an issue mid/late winter. Microclimates... 🤷
December 12, 2025 at 2:07 PM
I was surprised to see the squall reaching so far. Typically, they're rather localized. For example, at the height of winter, it isn't unheard of for the hwy 1/101 corridor (Kentville, New Minas, Wolfville) to be clear and sunny, while just a few km north (where I live), there's a raging snowstorm.

Seems like the latest platform update is the culprit: Not just targeting certain regions for "age assurance", but widespread. Let's hope this is a bug and not a //Meh... Whatever.// response. bsky.app/profile/bsky...
v1.111 is live today!

We've upgraded our Age Assurance system to comply with upcoming laws in Australia and other regions, and to restore access to people over 18 in Mississippi.

Plus, we fixed some bugs and laid the groundwork for improved "who to follow" suggestions in the near future.

Not quite 25cm, but close. Certainly much more than anticipated today, regardless. bsky.app/profile/vinc...
Storm total: 23.5cm, 15.4mm SWE, 15:1 ratio. (That back-high on a chihuahua for those keeping scientific measurements.) ~~ Current conditions: -8.0C, 69% RH, 1011mb, partly cloudy, light gusty breeze. #NSStorm #NSwx near #Kentville

Snow has just stopped here. Haven't been out to officially measure yet, but I anticipate that we've easily exceeded 25 cm a few kilometers north of Kentville. Thank dog it's light and fluffy stuff!
December 8, 2025 at 3:52 PM
Be glad the snow is fluffy, because that coat just screams "I'm gonna be covered head to toe and hard-packed, half-frozen snowballs..." one of these days.
December 8, 2025 at 3:24 PM
Was just out for the mid-morning pee break, and I wager that we'll be at the 25cm mark, give or take, before the snow lets up. And then we roll the dice with squalls off the Bay.
December 8, 2025 at 3:15 PM
Charlie thinks this light fluffy stuff is great. I scooped a couple paths and he quite enjoyed himself; then he decided to go down the driveway (which I haven't yet cleared)...took about four bounding leaps into the full depth of snow for him to "nope" out of that!

My wife used to make carrot cake jam from scratch that worked equally well on ice cream as it did on toast. (...or by the spoonful straight out of the jar if that's your thing).

On the topic of micro-climates, I present to you this morning's chihuahua weather from the eastern Annapolis Valley tucked up near the base of the north mountain: bsky.app/profile/vinc...
A tad more snow than anticipated by the forecast this morning. Measured 17.5cm (10.6mm SWE) at 8:30am. Scientifically speaking, that's shoulder-deep to a chihuahua. ~~ Current conditions: -7.5C, 83% RH, 1006mb, light breeze with reduced visibility, mod-heavy snowfall. #NSStorm #NSwx near #Kentville.
