Yourself, but as a cartoon

📽️ I decided to revisit the original Knives Out ahead of watching the latest installment, and I’m so happy I did. Hadn’t seen this since theaters, and was delightfully blown away by just how incredible it remains. Even better than I remembered!

My review:
Knives Out
It’s hard to overstate just how exciting it felt to watch Knives Out in 2019. Director Rian Johnson, fresh off his polarizing take on the Star Wars franchise with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, pivoted …

📽️ For me, The Super Mario Bros. Movie hits all the right notes. My daughter was especially delighted by it.

My review, if you’re inclined to read:
The Super Mario Bros. Movie
I have been playing Super Mario games for literally as long as I can remember. After nearly 40 years on this planet, I’ve played virtually every single game. I’ll always have a soft spo…

Man, nothing makes me feel like a bigger piece of shit then posting about sometime I’ve watched or read or played when everything feels like it’s falling apart.

I feel so helpless. So lost. I know moral injury is a real thing, but goddamn I am just so overwhelmed with the awfulness.

I highly recommending having my 4-year-old daughter design your next video game controller. This was her design for her’s, and it turned out perfectly her. She was so excited when she opened the box and saw her design come to life. 🥹

My first review of 2026 is for James Cameron’s Avatar.

As I watched it, I had to keep reminding myself that virtually nothing is real. I think it’s pure spectacle from start to finish. In fact, I’d argue it’s a generational film that is pretty close to perfect.

As I watched Avatar, I had to keep reminding myself that the film is almost entirely comprised of computer-generated visuals driven by motion-capture performance. The moon of Pandora isn’t re…

I used to love drawing, had an easel in my room and everything. When I told my dad I wanted to be an artist (at the tender age of 7), he told me, “Artists starve in the streets.” Single-handedly killed that dream. More than 30 years later, it still echoes in my mind.

📽️ Had a lot to say about Wicked: For Good, one of my biggest disappointments of the year.
Wicked: For Good
Wicked: For Good always had a tough hill to climb. As the highly anticipated sequel to last year’s mega-hit Wicked, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, there was a lot of pre…

📽️ Sonic the Hedgehog is really the first film I’ve reappraised since becoming a father. This time, my nostalgia took a backseat and I watched it through my daughter’s reactions. It was a totally different experience! And what it says about loneliness really spoke to me this time around.
Sonic the Hedgehog
I know I’m dating myself by admitting this, but 30 years ago, I was a massive Sonic the Hedgehog fan. I didn’t have a Sega Genesis growing up, but that didn’t stop me from falling…

The big thing I’m weighing as a novice critic with not nearly enough time on my hands:

I really want to see the new Avatar. I have a chance to see it next week while my daughter is in daycare. But I haven’t seen the first two in a while. Should I rewatch and review them before seeing the new one?

That’s a wrap on Ghost of Yotei. Incredible game. Strong GOTY contender, but unfortunately nothing is gonna top Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for me this year.

The Naked Gun! My expectations were too high, but still had a lot of laughs while watching. It has plenty of dud jokes, but when it’s funny… it’s very funny. Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson are fantastic in this. More straight-up comedies from Hollywood, please! My review:
The Naked Gun (2025)
When The Naked Gun was first announced, I thought it was about damn time. It feels like in the last 20 years or so, comedies have largely disappeared from theaters. Sure, there are plenty of films …

Lots of folks catching Zootopia 2 in theaters. Meanwhile, I’m in a severe theatrical slump and just a very tired dad. Anyway, we watched the first Zootopia with my daughter and that’s what I’m reviewing this week.
Zootopia
On its surface, Zootopia feels like a no-brainer film for kids. It’s not just the bright colors or heaps of jokes, either. It’s got anthropomorphic animals, genuinely memorable characters, a catchy…

For the morning crowd…
Really proud of this one. If you’re not tired of reviews and essays on del Toro’s Frankenstein, I humbly ask you to check out my take.

This is a damn good film. Honestly, I think one of the year’s best.
Frankenstein (2025)
It says a lot about my admiration for director Guillermo del Toro that I was eagerly anticipating watching his take on Frankenstein. It’s a story that’s been done to death, after all. There are so …

Casper
In 1995, it was impossible to escape the marketing buzz for Casper. It was a film aimed squarely at kids, starring a character that adults remembered from their own childhood. Long before the days of weaponized nostalgia, the filmmakers behind Casper had found a way to appeal to a wide swath of audiences and deliver a family-friendly film that all ages could enjoy. I didn’t see a ton of movies in the theater as a kid, and at the age of 8, I wasn’t eagerly anticipating Casper. I was a pretty wimpy kid, and ghosts weren’t something I gravitated toward. Needless to say, I didn’t see the film. In fact, I don’t know that I ever gave the film much thought again until this year. As my wife and I hunted for age-appropriate spooky movies to show our 4-year-old daughter, we stumbled upon the fact that Casper was celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Having never seen it, but remembering the omnipresent marketing from my childhood, I was intrigued at the idea of watching it for the first time alongside my daughter.

Watched Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow for the first time recently, and really enjoyed it! Wasn’t quite what I expected, but I had a lot of fun with it. Has any film better encapsulated the fall season? My review:
Sleepy Hollow
When I was a little kid, I was fascinated with the legend of Sleepy Hollow. As I’m sure many of my contemporaries did, I first learned about it from the “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” segment of the Dis…
