Design (particularly of the digi-gov variety), books and brunch (usually from NE England). Brits think I sound Kiwi, Kiwis think I sound English. Links-a-plenty, views my own. https://vickyteinaki.com
Also, some fun diagrams about the spheres of civic design (though i'm twitching in that I think l-r axes switch from diagram 1 to 2). From raco.cat/index.php/Te... . Second diagram defo inspired by both liz sanders' research methods and dubblerly's play on it www.dubberly.com/articles/an-...

Tested my rusty language skills by attending an agile conf in Spanish (mostly) which I understood (mostly). Made me appreciate the GDS principles of good presentation design (a few words as visual aids) and why to speak slowly. Thanks @zuz.bsky.social for asking internet friends to attend!

I sometimes think that there is a missing trick in thoughtful reminders - be it periodic reminders of who a back up person is for certain things, or here about back up codes. I'd love to see more reassurance work in UX in general.

I've seen stuff where my name is missed out for a placeholder but not one where the name of the person writing the message has a placeholder!

Love a wall of shame - this from the bbc realising how fragmented their ecosystem was (so many different types of buttons) #DSDay24

Fragmented landscapes lead to confusing journeys (also reminds me of the thing that it’s “easier to write than read” - easier to build a new thing than fix and join up and old one) #dsday24

Little nerdy blogging Medium tip - from basic editorial training I know when missing a name to use the placeholder 'TK' (colloquially meant 'to come' but practically just something that isn't a usual combination of letters in English so easy to bulk find), love that Medium shows it in the margin!

My housemate is sick of work and asked about sick pay. After a delay their manager sent them this form to print and photograph, as it’s my printer I got the link, took one look and said “absolutely not that looks like ID fraud”. Govuk has a “complete and then download pdf of answers to send”

And cos it's a sunday - I wonder if there's a 'users with anxiety or trauma' version of this with things like:
- do use colour and typography for important actions, don't use red or orange for actions like missed payments
- do use neutral don't use shouty (or overly friendly) text
etc

I defo have to do a lot to keep getting designers to work from hypotheses rather than fall back to 'what do users want/prefer' (arrgh in gov it's what they need) and also remind to start from a hunch. So I really like Erin Weigel's framing of 'design like you're right'

I need to do some fact checking on this, but wild if its thesis is correct - that Le Corbusier being sighted in only one eye means his Bauhaus principles don't feel right to most stereoscopically sighted people www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

Also love this from the Design Matters debat: Tey Bannerman suggesting that designers should follow the lead of regulated professions like doctors and lawyers we should build in accountability and a commitment (interestingly lawyers don't need to go to law school but they do need to pass the bar)

As a user whose legal first name is different from their preferred first name
When I am asked for my full name
I need to know what it’s being used for
So I can give the appropriate version of my name to meet the requirements of the service
