The Fear-Powered Cell Phone is an item from Mage: The Awakening 1E that seems like it'd be difficult for mages to disentangle on the face of it, but falls apart in one crucial aspect: it puts a weird Mystery in front of compulsive Mystery-addicted puzzle-solvers.

Jonathan Creek accidentally outs you with an innocent but insensitive comment, explains that he just jumped to conclusions after seeing your socks in lieu of an apology, then gets a weird faraway look in his eye as he repeats "the striped pattern..." and then runs off, leaving an exasperated Maddy trailing after him explaining that he can't just openly assume someone's transgender because of their socks. Two days later it turns out that the inexplicable locked-room death of your studio's production manager was an extremely elaborate murder by the costume designer.

AUSPICE: Anthony Callahan, let the record show posterity that as of the midnight hour beginning August 5th 2016, this Convocation has reached a decision upon your fate. Are you prepared to receive it? CALLAHAN: As I’ll ever be, I guess, Your Honors. AUSPICE: We have considered the facts of your case very carefully, and thought upon the potential ramifications of our judgement. This we declare: due to a variety of extenuating circumstances, and compelling arguments made by the counsel for your defense, this Convocation sees fit to act with significant leniency regarding your violations of the Lex Magica. CLYTEMNESTRA: Our judgement is this: your actions and attitude reek of recklessness, but we believe this is a flaw that can be overcome, not an unavoidable damnation. You will answer for your crimes – mundane and magical - by ensuring they do not happen again. The Mysterium and the Adamantine Arrow jointly maintain an academy in the Canadian Rockies. We’ve negotiated for your attendance there – ah, yes, Mr. Callahan? You have a question? CALLAHAN: I’m presuming this isn’t a request. I do not dispute that Mr. Callahan’s escapades would certainly constitute very severe violations of the Lex Magica for a mage in full understanding of both the law and his own nature. I contend that Mr. Callahan had neither; no-one was there to catch him up and explain to him what was happening to him. That was the responsibility of either the Columbia or St. Louis Consilia, who, as we’ve already heard, were too engrossed in jurisdictional disputes. He was alone, and acted accordingly. TREMAINE: That doesn’t excuse the sheer level of carelessness he displayed in his attempts to evade Sleeper law enforcement! VIRIDIAN: Are you suggesting, Emissary, that because his actions were of extraordinary inconvenience to us, they merit extraordinary interpretation of our laws? TREMAINE: I’m sorry, but the sheer number of violations, the attention drawn upon us, the sheer amount of magic used before Sleeping eyes – the Denver Paradox! Do you have any idea of the precedent it would set in law were he allowed to– VIRIDIAN: And do you think punishing Mr. Callahan would not set a horrific precedent of its own? You would essentially criminalize having a troubled Awakening. You are gatekeeping enlightenment, restricting it to those who don’t misbehave too much.

How many of us had invoked Paradox, or worked magic in front of Sleepers, by the time our fellows found us? Mr. Callahan Awoke in deeply traumatic circumstances. His first few days were spent afraid, confused, pursued and tormented. TREMAINE: He was being pursued because he escaped from a maximum-security prison where he was serving a 17-year sentence for armed robbery, to which he plead guilty. VIRIDIAN: Sorry, are we... citing the primacy of Sleeper law over the Lex Magica now? May I ask who among this assemblage has never committed a crime by United States law? Come on. Hands up! [roughly twenty seconds of silence] VIRIDIAN: Now come on, everyone, don’t be shy! I want to cross “meet a unicorn” off my bucket list! [roughly ten more seconds of silence] VIRIDIAN: Right. Anthony has... mixed opinions about his fellow mages. #MageTheAwakening
I had visitors, too – a fuckload of them. They used a lot more Proper Nouns: Council, Assembly, Ladder, Adamantine Arrow, Mysterium. I asked for a notebook, and they gave me one, so I started writing names down when I heard them – and on the rare occasions when someone would give me a straight answer, what those names meant. Some of them just wanted to see if I was doing okay. Others kinda just seemed to be around to look at me, like I was some animal in a zoo – or asked questions, endless questions. Some wanted to talk to me, or at me. For a week, I was the main attraction for every Mage in Chicago, and it seemed like everyone wanted a ride. It was about then I realized I had power – just a little. See, I figured out two things about Mages real fast. Mage Fact #1: Mages fucking love to talk. You get a Mage in a room with anything that can hear him – or fuck, that he even thinks can hear him – he’ll talk for hours. Pet theories, political views, grudges, baseball trivia, whatever. Mages are giant wasp nests full of words and it only takes the lightest touch to get us motherfuckers buzzing like a broken fridge. Mage Fact #2: Mages fucking love to patronize. If a Mage thinks you’re dumber than he is, nothing will get his dick harder than the thought that he might dispel your quaint ignorance. So, I did the smart thing: played dumb. I acted the poor, bewildered fish, terrified by this hellish new world, confused by all this new slang. Please, sir, can’t you explain to a poor jailbird what’s going on? I wake up every day and there’s new faces and I’m so stressed out. What’s a Consilium? Who’s a Guardian? How do you spell “Magisterium?”

I sigh. “Look, I get what you’re doing, okay? You’re trying to make a point. Magic.” I pause. “Sorry. I’m a mage? I’m doing magic? It just sounds so… fuckin’ dumb to say.” He gives me that exasperated look again, the one you use when you’re arguing with a child. “Regardless of your feelings on the exact terminology, Mr. Callahan, magic presses against the skin of the world like something sharp. Used with due care and attention, it is a needle – precise, exacting, limited in its scope. Employed injudiciously, it’s rather more like a stab wound. What you’ve been doing is somewhat akin to…” He cups his chin. “Well, if we’re to play out our current metaphor to its conclusion, you’ve been swinging a machete in a crowded room.”
