Overall, I think a movie that is more "important" than "good." This clip is a good example: gorgeous framing & composition of people just bullshitting around for 2 hours

I did love the line "You know, these dances... these wild, crazy dances... I think they've succeeded where science failed."

second favorite shot: this push in on Steiger and Poitier, with Warren Oates and the diner's flashing neon sign framed between them

first favorite shot: filming Poitier through the hole in the jailhouse door, then turning to watch the officers lock in the cell with Harvey

In the Heat of the Night (1967): I didn't know much about this movie other than "They call me Mister Tibbs!" but knew it was gonna deliver when I saw Haskell Wexler in the opening credits. (1) damn this movie looks good (2) its so crazy they have to oscar to rod steiger rather than sidney poitier

Also like many 50s noirs, I am willing to overlook the dumb stuff (a woman trying to sell her child for $2000, a high-stakes game of hand-slap between drug dealers) because Bill Duke makes it look so good & Fishburne is ice cold. Even this basic meeting with Fishburne's handler pops off the screen

Deep Cover (1992): It took me a little while to get in the right mindset for just how pulpy this movie is. It is very much like watching a 1950s noir; you have to accept some very obvious voiceover and dumb melodramatic plotting in order to get the good stuff (neon-bathed larry fishburne)

my favorite sequence was the citizens of the idyllic small town reading a sensational newspaper headline. great use of text on screen!

I have to commend it for being pretty stylish! The opening scene certainly grabbed my attention.

It is your division. We are in the "Canyon" region (which has one A-Division, one B-Division, two C-, D- and E- Divisions and one Rookie Division). I have made it one season into the B division before getting immediately relegated.

Another favorite part: I think this clip shows how Preminger's assurance & craft helps this kind of movie: Stewart stepping aside to reveal Gazzara, who then walks to the stand. The camera pushes in on them rather than cuts, then Scott & Stewart deftly trade places after the reverse shot of Gazzara

baby Ben Gazzara and Lee Remick were really great. Obviously it helps that they both are filmed really gorgeously. Remick's role in particular is pretty crazy to see in 1959. Others read it differently but I feel like the movie acknowledged her flirtatiousness without blaming her assault on it

The most arresting scene in the movie is Haruko's assault by the three drunk sailors. The low angle as she's trapped behind the bed, the sailors' animalistic barbarism, the flip in perspective after the punch, the nightmarish camera spin from the ceiling. really really powerful stuff

Pigs and Battleships (1961): In the first 10 minutes of the movie, you can instantly tell that you are witnessing an iconic fit. apparently this movie helped popularize the sukajan "souvenir jacket" among japanese youth and I can understand why. its a sick fucking jacket

Jurassic Park (1993): Its so crazy watching this immediately after Jurassic World lol. It turns out the key to Jurassic Park is Steven Spielberg. Check out the camera movement, framing and blocking in this 45-second shot focused on a literal pile of shit. Colin Trevorrow simply can not do this

Favorite parts: (1) the blue of the phone booths as Ah-jung & May Lin pursue each other (2) After a long, lingering shot of May Lin stroking the bare mattress (the DVD cover image), Ah-Jung sneaks out from under the bed. Incredible comedic timing (3) Ah-Jung tenderly lighting Hsiao-kang's cigarette
