If I saw his mother again, though, all these years later and as a woman roughly the same age she was when she married Doug, if she started talking about him, I think I'd have to shut down or change the subject. Frankly, I wouldn't even want to see her again.

I say was because Doug didn't wear his sunscreen. It killed him, I believe in his 40s.

I think my friend's mother put her own happiness above her child's wellbeing. The two dog incidents were two of many, especially for my friend.

Of course I was very "sympathetic" when he passed.

But every adult who knew him just thought the world of Doug. He was so fun and charming!

I hated the man. His kids were little shits and he treated every kid like he expected them to be, too. I can honestly say Doug is one of the many male failures in my life who made me never want to get married.

Doug kept pushing him to have her put down, but my friend was in denial.

So, of course, he made the worst decision possible. Doug secretly had Dale put down while my friend was at school.

He came home to a missing Dale and went into absolute apoplexy. I know it was incredibly traumatic.

My friend, of course, had to live with him. Their other dog, Dale, got sick when he was a teenager. Dale was his dog - a sweet, gentle, petite German shepherd mix. She was his comfort.

My friend had a hard time accepting that she was dying young, and was trying to take care of her, bring her back.

And I hadn't kicked him, I'd pushed him off of me with my foot. My friend backed me up but Doug kept insisting he'd seen me kick the dog.

He told my mom. Thank God my mom knew me better than that. (And Chip too for that matter.) She believed me and just let the matter drop.

Finally, instinctively, I placed my bare foot on his sternum and firmly pushed him away.

Just then, my friend's stepfather - a former marine who liked to Assert His Authoritay - walked in and instantly yelled at me for "kicking the dog."

I explained that he'd been jumping on me again...

One day I was sitting in their living room, and Chip started on me. Remember, he was a big dog and we were middle schoolers. I tried to curl up into the chair away from him and push him away with my hands while my friend tried to pull him off. It didn't work, he was determined and strong.

I was a kid who was good with animals. I had never mistreated an animal or abused one in my life. I loved animals and was more likely to be intimidated by them than to try to hurt them. I was always kind to Chip when he was behaving and only pushed him away - or sometimes hid - when he wasn't.

He had a bit of a fixation with me and other girls - I don't remember if he was neutered or not but maybe not. He would sniff and lick me inappropriately, and would throw himself at me when rebuffed, jumping on me, scratching, barking, and even snapping to the point of nearly attacking.

Good. Protect your peace.

I think I like my removable option. 😅

Do you have a UV light, maybe? It sounds like you could use a little store bought sun.

Having fully sentient characters with human forms who live their daily lives as cats has brought up so many questions about Sailor Moon for me.

Same. I was super enthusiastic for Christmas this year earlier but now that I've put in endless effort and money I am so over it.

Yes but the Nutcracker had women from the start.

I totally get it, trust me.

Your friends know! :) Speaking of which, I finally DMed you back. (Sorry for the wait, it's the most stressful time of the year.)

For the record, yes, I understand this predates modern drag traditions and isn't precisely the same. I'm just pointing out that it was not considered inappropriate and it's a role typically filled by a special guest celebrity today.

I just noticed my alt text labeled the nix-hound as a nix-ox. It's a little nix-hound, not a giant nix-ox.
