In 2021, several ICE facilities in #NJ closed following state legislation that prohibited new, expanded, or renewed detention contracts. Shortly after, ICE began detaining people at Moshannon Valley Processing Center in Pennsylvania & it rapidly became the largest detention center in the Northeast.

But community-centered alternatives are still sorely underused. The U.S. still overuses prisons and punitive alternatives like probation and parole to deliver punishment. This is not the solution. Addressing harm and the root causes that bring someone into the criminal legal system is.

The program they completed is an alternative to incarceration (ATI). ATIs are effective: Research shows that people who have participated in these programs are 41.5% less likely to be rearrested than those who have been prosecuted and sentenced. *Names changed to protect identity.
