a little bit late but a #WIPWednesday from the final chapter of Were-Ever You Go, There You Are (archiveofourown.org/works/691463...) the fic I'm writing with @petrichorca.bsky.social with art by @mahnah.bsky.social - Ed gets some expert advice
One afternoon not long after beginning his opus, Stede’s “best frenemy” Lucius drives past Ed’s house, then slams on his brakes, backs up, rolls down the window, and calls, “You ok?” Ed gestures at his painting. “Just, you know. Working on my creative pursuit.” Lucius turns off his car and sets the parking brake before walking up to the verandah, squinting at Ed’s art. “Um. Do you think it’s safe to put so much wet paint on the canvas?” Ed shrugs. The canvas is sagging a little, especially around the dark vortex that symbolizes emotions. “That’s just layered colors to make the hand holding onto the cliff’s edge. See? The little bloody fingernails?” Lucius nods. “Mmmhmm.” “D’you hate it?” “Hate is such a strong, and wrong word.” Lucius steps closer, eyes roving all around the canvas’s surface. “But I’m wondering, what’s happening in this painting?” “This is a guy who’s clinging on to the cliff’s edge,” Ed explains patiently. “Right,” Lucius says. “But, well, I guess, why? Why cling on?” “Otherwise he’d just fall off the cliff and die.” Lucius looks at Ed, then back at the canvas, in a way that makes Ed feel like he’s seeing the deeper meaning behind it. He’s not sure how he feels about the mortifying ordeal of being known. Lucius looks back at Ed. “What if he doesn’t die? What if life just begins again?” Embarrassingly, Ed feels his eyes start to well. He turns back to the canvas so Lucius won’t see, dabbles a little splash of teal on the horizon without really meaning to, but, oh, doesn’t it look a little hopeful? And isn’t that what he’s doing already, away from the career that had consumed his life for so many years? Painting like this, taking walks in nature, fucking kayaking - it’s all life beginning again. “I like that color,” Lucius says, voice soft. “Anyway, I’ll let you get back to it.” “Yeah, cheers.” Ed returns to carefully dabbing at that teal spot, trying to blend it into the darkness of the rest of the scene.

Ed trails after him, ending up in front of his own mailbox with Auntie, Buttons, Archie, her boyfriend Oluwande, and Stede’s engaged friends. Everyone but Buttons has a drink; Buttons has a faraway look on his face, but that’s pretty normal, in Ed’s experience. “Didn’t you two look cozy?” says Lucius, a shit-eating grin on his face. Stede doesn’t seem to hear him. Ed growls under his breath; he can be big and scary when he wants to be. The boy looks cowed. “It’s just nice to see Stedey make a new fr -” “Is that normal?” Stede interrupts. The rest of them follow his gaze toward the trees. Everyone goes silent. “That’s a lot of seagulls,” says Oluwande after a moment. “Actually an alarming amount of seagulls,” says Archie, frowning. “Fucking opportunists,” Auntie mutters. “They aren’t getting my potatoes.”

Something wakes Ed in the night - a haunting sound - a wailing, a caterwauling, a howl straight from a horror film - and he shoots up to sitting, fully awake, eyes wide as he searches for the source of it. It’s outside, his brain is sure of that, but close. He pulls the blinds over the window beside his bed to the side and peers out just in time to see a hulking shadow - a massive, furry thing - claws - jaws - teeth - disappear out of the range of the streetlight a floor below. Baffled, he leans forward, pressing his nose against the pane in an effort to see more, but all he can see now is a blonde head attached to a normal-looking, broad-shouldered man, arm out with a leash that must be attached to a dog who is too much in shadow for Ed to make it out, and then that too disappears out of the light. He lets the blind fall back into place and flops back against his pillow, reaching for his phone. The screen blinds him and he nearly drops it on his forehead, but he manages to type into search, “Burnout causes hallucination?” The blue light of his phone hurts his eyes, so after a minute of scrolling he puts down his phone on the empty pillow beside him. He stares at his dark ceiling. It was just some guy and his dog, walking at an absurdly late hour, but that’s all it was. The howl was probably a distant siren, part of some dream he can’t remember; maybe the guy has a mastiff or great dane with a spiked collar or some shit like that Ed couldn’t see. See, easy peasy explanation, Teach, go the fuck to sleep.

Ed looks up directly into eight glossy black arachnid eyes just as the woman behind him jostles him with her large shopping bag. He stumbles forward; the pale hand holding the tarantula moves smoothly back towards a broad chest, cupping around the spider protectively. Ed catches his balance as his brain registers just how broad the chest is - muscular, too, by the look of how the buttons aren’t just resting on their laurels but actively straining to hold the shirt together - just as the (oh no he’s handsome) man whose chest it is says to the woman, “Please be calm around Arthur. He has a bit of stage fright.” “He wasn’t moving,” the woman says, pointing at Ed. “And he hasn’t even got a child with him!” “Yeah, it’s not fair!” the woman’s own child whines. “I want to see the spider!” The man looks at Ed and oh no he’s really handsome, hazel eyes and blond hair and a distinguished nose and a quirk to his mouth that makes Ed feel like it’s just the two of them, in on the world’s best joke. “Sorry,” he says to the woman in a tone that is anything but, “Mr - er - what’s your name?” “Ed,” Ed says. “Mr Ed -” he starts, then wrinkles up his nose. “Mr Ed? No, that’s terrible.” “It’s true, mate.” Ed shrugs, puts on his most bashful face. “I live my life in the shadow of classic TV’s greatest horse.” The man shakes his (handsome, handsome) head. “I won’t allow it. Surely you’ve got another name.” Ed considers. “How about Jeff?” “Perfect,” the man says, then looks pointedly at the child and says, “Mr Jeff here deserves to see Arthur just as much as you do, so please wait your turn.” Ed’s still reeling from the implication that this man is defending his right to see a spider when he looks back at Ed and says, “Are you ready to meet Arthur?” “Uh.” Oh. Right. The spider. Fuck. “Actually, you know what, I’m good,” he says, and then he turns around sharply - nearly collides with the woman with the shopping bag
