Reason given is for coast line resiliency work, but when asked why flood gates are specifically under the art plaza, discussions were ended with public and community board.
NB most of the $65M public art collection is site specific along Esplanade, as. More is in jeopardy.
People to gather at 8am, Wednesday Nov 12, near Upper Room, 1985, by Ned Smyth, at Albany Street and the Esplanade / Hudson River to show support for the #publicsculpture and witness destruction of this NY State property ($1.7M value).

The late Agnes Gund was part of that original committee. They also commissioned the Scott Burden, and more. (I wrote about this history in my book Sculpture in Gotham.)
The work was commissioned through a bona fide process, involving art experts, as a permanent work.

America deserves better than JD Vance
Shapiro: He rose to some prominence by writing a book about growing up in Appalachia, where there are a whole lot of people who get SNAP. He made millions of dollars off telling their stories, and then he turned his damn back on those very people he likes to write about and claim as his own.
