TBF there was a lot of hollowing it out with advertisements and pay to play search results that happened between those two states, but the point remains.

All that overtime actually served the double bonus of extra cash AND never having to be home to have any responsibility as a parent to his kids.

I think about a certain older dad I know who probably thinks he was a good dad because he "provided for his family" being career focused and working massive numbers of hours, but his kids talk like they grew up poor because he only ever actually spent that money on himself.

I think part of it for me is that I am exaggerating the selfish prick thing. What it actually was had more to do with coming to grips with just how big a commitment you had signed yourself up for and that is unfortunately an issue that can be dodged if you really want to neglect your family.

I feel like I had a major "I had no idea what a selfish prick I was" crisis after our first was born, but that was really it, the addition of another child didn't really multiply the point. If you don't have that shift after the first one, maybe two, no quiver will be full enough for you to get it.

This is the side you ask that person in your family who can't cook to bring. My wife decided she wanted to make it from scratch one year and I couldn't make her understand that it was counter to the entire spirit of the dish.

Can you imagine making the choices in life that would lead to you hanging out with Stephen Miller?
