A side note--it's really hard to recreate the environment that allows for that kind of learning on line, whether synchronous or asynchronous. It requires both fluidity of communication and time spent getting to know each other.

Facilitation matters for guiding the conversation, keeping it on target, navigating conflict etc. But I remember things my peers said in class much more clearly than anything I took notes on. (5/5)

A memory that sticks with me from undergrad is a time I made a statement to the effect of "obviously I think humans are more important than animals" and a peer was like "why though?" (in a minimally snarky way). (3/5)

Plus I think there are times when hearing something from a peer makes it more credible than hearing it from an expert who feels far removed from our own life experience. (2/5)

I'm thinking in the context of the humanities, primarily. Students are able to articulate a variety of experiences and positions that their peers haven't encountered before, and by virtue of being peers can express ideas in ways that resonate. (1/5)

Students' ability to learn from each other. (Facilitated) conversation between students can be more impactful than a lot of more "measurable" pedagogical tools.
