Some of the foaming pollution on the river they've been talking about
The shore of the grand river here is mostly sandy with some rocks and there is a little bit of white foam on the waves. There is more foam on the water here. There are little bits of leaves and gravel in the sand. There is some more foam at the edge of the river.

The ground is still warm so everything melted on contact.

This was the first snow and freeze we had last week
A pond filled with lily pads covered in a thin layer of ice and snow. There are some bare trees and grasses on a ridge of land in between ponds and in the background there is a forest and some of those trees still have yellow orange red and brown leaves. More of the semi frozen pond. There is still some snow on the sticks and grasses that poke through the water which is mostly a dull green color. The pond is surrounded by trees that have lost their leaves. This pond only has a patch of slushy ice in the corner. The sky is overcast white. In the forest. The trees have lost their leaves but some of the shrubs still have yellowish green leaves and this one small guy has bright red leaves.

There was a lot of anxiety about our fall colors this year due to drought but it was good year for color. We had a few weeks of gentle winds to start the month, then we had a couple storms blow through in the past few weeks which makes a huge difference. Some years one storm will blow them all away

There are yellow and orange trees all along this trail which has a small sign that says "do not enter please" with a red circle indicating it's the wrong way on a one way track. A bunch of short yellow trees among taller trees with scarce brown leaves. There is another wrong way sign. A thin branch attempts to block our path. The ground is covered in a thick layer of freshly fallen leaves A small bright orange tree on the side of a parking lot. The leaves have fallen directly down into a circle around the tree.

So until we get some good snow and ice I'm unlikely to skeet so many pictures from a single hiking trip like this
Looking down the barrel of a hollow old log there is some light at the end of the tunnel. Dew drops on the back of a fallen leaf are the remnants of the morning's frost. A jumble of logs in a small wet pit is the perfect place for moss and mushrooms and ferns to grow even late in the season. More logs and stumps covered in green moss and lichen. There are also some ferns and other small plants which are still green.

I still find the forest and its trees are beautiful without the leaves but I don't feel compelled to take as many pictures without them.

Either way the leaves would only last a couple months like that before we would throw them away, but it's still a nice bit of color in the brown and white winter months
The forest here is mostly orange trees which are fading to the yellow as you move to the right. A mix of orange and yellow trees with a dark green pine tree on either side. Here in the forest the tree trunks form a wall of gray as you look into the distance. Here are some darker orange colors growing near a short pine tree, maybe they're fading to brown or bronze.

My family would just hang them by the door or put them in a bowl with some decorative gourds but my sisters liked to make them into circlets.

Lots of good memories of burgers and brats on the grill at the public park before using the coals to melt a brick of wax in a tinfoil cake pan. My siblings and cousins all running through the woods and filling our little paper bags with leaves to take home.
Deep in the forest. Sky shines now where in summer it wouldn't. Tall thin tree trunks disappear into the yellow distance. A trail through the woods is marked by trampled brown leaves. All around high and low are trees with yellow leaves. The tree trunks here are mostly smooth and gray. They often have messages carved into their bark and their leaves are all yellow and orange. The forest here is all orange. Some of the white cloudy sky is visible through gaps in the leaves.

Seeing all the beautiful colors reminds me of being a kid when we used to dip leaves in pots of hot wax to preserve them through the winter
This bright and colorful spot in the woods also has the dark lines of woody vines which cling to a tree in the foreground. The trees here have a mix of orange, yellow, and even a smattering of still green leaves. The trail is covered by loose dry leaves which are already starting to lose their color. The trees here are thinner and shorter and closer together than before, but except for one green tree, they are all the same beautiful orange and yellow colors of the bigger trees. A thin pine tree gives a few streaks of dark green to contrast the bright orange and yellow leaves on the trees that surround it.

Most of the trees have faded and their leaves have fallen since
Many trees in a forest that all have yellow leaves. The ground is cluttered with fallen trees and covered in yellow and orange leaves. This forest has many tall trees growing wide apart from each other, and high above in the canopy are many orange and yellow leaves which reflects the many plants growing underfoot which have also turned yellow and orange. A trail through the forest is covered in a deep layer of leaves. The trees all around have orange leaves. There is a green pine tree hiding behind tree trunks in the orange and yellow undergrowth.

This was the day after the first hard frost a few weeks back
A pine tree with clusters of yellow needles and drooping branches. This pine tree's branches look like strings of yellow flowers but they are really pine needles on thin branches almost like a weeping willow. A path through the forest flanked by orange and yellow trees all along the path. The trunk of a pine tree is oozing sticky sap down its front and it is starting to pool around the base of the tree.

There used to be another overlook here but it's long gone now

I saw a centipede crawling around in the mud that day

As the season went on I had to go deeper into the forests because all the trees around the edges had their leaves blown off

I really liked this rock
A rock covered in green moss and lichen. The other side of the rock is almost entirely covered in moss. The other initial point depicting the west line and meridian. The east half says Jackson county and the rest is covered in leaves. The north west corner says Ingham co Leslie twp section 36 town 1 north range 1 west. The south west corner says Jackson co rives twp section 1 town 1 south range 1 west. Looking down the west baseline. There are some trees here but more shorter grassy plants than the other initial point.
