The entire novel is an allegory for that: man’s capacity for evil when stripped of the illusions of civility. Savagery is born from the same societies that call themselves civilized.

...and had to laugh. It was written about British choir schoolboys in a Christian imperial culture to show that the capacity for “savagery” isn’t in some distant other.

So I’m grading this narrative paper from a student, and we have this program we use so we can watch them write it.
