I would argue that a sense of right and wrong—a real sense of right and wrong, not the kind imposed by authority-based morality—depends on, at a minimum, a recognition that other people are, in fact, people such as ourselves. Which is empathy.

Being empathetic doesn’t make you a better person, but it is a threshold requirement for being a better person.

This has been a stone in my shoe for, no exaggeration, 40 years. You know what causes drunk driving? An infrastructure that makes it impossible to do anything without driving, whether you’re sober or drunk.

That’s the thing. The campaign against drunk driving was remarkably successful, but instead of focusing on driving they emphasized the drunk part, ignoring the reality that sober drivers kill more people than drunk pedestrians.
