Interesting how they’re only putting the she/they instructor on leave, not the she/her instructor who concurred with her colleague and said the grade was justified.
Also, TIL that the 1st Amendment guarantees a passing grade if you half-ass your academic essay but repeatedly mention your religion.

Yeah, not sure how “send them to a friend’s house“ scales to a statewide population without reinventing dayhomes—which cost money ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Definitely angling for a block.

- using the info without checking sources exposes you to possible misinformation
- visiting the sources makes the summary redundant

Therefore, in my view, the only function of the summary is trying to train me to trust Google’s AI without checking the info. I’m too old to do that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Whoops, I didn’t mean to post the cartoon at you. I had it loaded but thought I deleted it 😉

My assumption is that any Gail skeet that starts with “If [blank] is so great…” will turn absurd by the end of the sentence 😜
Gail Simone is an A* troll.

I think that LLMs are a fascinating technology with some cool applications, but corporations have made an existential bet on integrating them into every human activity, regardless of utility or possible harm. My best case scenario is a bubble crash that wipes out the hype and makes them tools again.

I totally understand the fear of throwing out the baby with the bathwater. If it’s any consolation, most of the people I know are careful to differentiate between AI™️—the marketing term being used to warp the economy—and ML, which /isn’t/ pretending to be a 1-1 worker-replacement.

Has your administration told faculty that Google Translate is the future, and that they should work on integrating Google Translate into their syllabus and their professional life? 😉

Wait till everyone finds out that crows are in fact black things.

Man, in the early ‘90s I was working on a campaign setting based on “why not have a successful, well-managed imperial nation established by orcs?” Even if you start as a player by leaning into the tropes, after a few years you want to switch things up. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Probably because no one is insisting that Google Translate needs massive new datacentres that require recommissioning coal plants; CEOs aren’t insisting that employees leverage Google Translate in everything they do; teachers aren’t dealing with students who use Google Translate to do their homework

Are you there, Jeremy? If so, thanks for taking one for the team.

The people who tell you they want small government are again breaking their own rules because they think they know better than you and your doctor.

Forget the doctors—there are practically zero women who carry a fetus into the third trimester and then decide to have an abortion without the situation being dire. These are wanted pregnancies, and the terminations are almost invariably a heartbreaking choice.
