(Hubert H. Humphrey, November 1 1977 in Washington, D.C. Ignorant guy- Canada activitivly has programs for the euthanasia of the mentally febel. I greatly identify with those mentally febel people but I don't think government sanctioned suicide is good leadership. Trish Menzies - We don't actually. We have MAiD. Which has very strict guidelines for qualification. My cousin who has ALS and is rapidly losing control over her body signed up for it. She was just diagnosed this year and has already lost speech, most motor function and chose to leave her body rather than be trapped in it. I also have a rare condition that when pain meds no longer work I want to opt out. It is a compassionate service for people who don't want to suffer endlessly. Also once you sign up, you can opt out at any time... its your personal choice. Ignorant guy- Trish Menzies There's always hope. It is a personal choice but I've seen cases where people are just depressed and they want to kill themselves so the government just let's them and the elderly. Its cheaper to kill the "undesirable" then to cure them. This is a symptom of free Healthcare. There is no competition and when the government controls it the ethics part of the equation goes out the window. Reply Trish Menzies - the program is not currently accepting people with mental illnesses. Nor does it "just kill the elderly" It is not a symptom in free healthcare. It actually has nothing to do with free healthcare. I've looked into the program extensively for myself because I have a rare condition and I am in pain 24 hours a day 7 days a week and have been for over 27 years. My condition acts like a brain tumour/ meningitis and the headaches are astronomical. When the pain meds stop working because I have built up such a tolerance... I want the ability to leave the world on my own terms. Because we have universal healthcare I was lucky enough that we have tried every single possible treatment, procedure, medication, long shot and far fetched idea they could come up with to try and help me. Unfortunately for me nothing works. MAiD is currently only available to people with extreme conditions that are terminal and have no cure. End stage Cancer patients who don't want to suffer, ALS patients who don't want to be trapped in bodies that no longer work. It is a compassionate service. Also you have to sign up for it, go through the qualification process. No one is forced to sign up. It's entirely optional. Once you've qualified... you could be in the bed about to receive treatment and can change your mind and stop. No one is forced to do anything. This is about a choice, bodily autonomy and giving the dying dignity in death. My friend- Ignorant guy, What are your sources regarding what seems to be a pretty laissez faire approach to what is actually pretty regulated regarding who can qualify and who can't for such service in other countries. Reply My friend- One of the guidelines to assisted suicide is that its not being done for financial pressure. We don't have free healthcare but a DNR, do not resuscitate, and is, I believe the closest thing we'll get to it in the US as of now. Letting people choose how and when they die is about dignity and it's always been provided one way or another. Trish Menzies - I've heard his opinion from many an uninformed American, and super religious Canadians. I'd much rather opt out of life than be stuck in a ventilator farm in the US. I am unbelievably thankful we have a choice in Canada. Ignorant guy- people get help when and if they need it but the Canadian government mixed with the free Healthcare is a conflict of interest and It is abused and will be. Plus the Canadian government honored a genuine ex-Nazi soldier in ther parliament. I think they align with national socialism which is very scary when we're talking about the weakest in a society. I have looked through the qualifications for myself. My cousin is signed up for it. Have you even actually gone and looked at the actual application process on the website? Or anything that isn't memes and propaganda? My fil has cancer and a myriad of other issues... not once has anyone suggested MAiD to him. He receives excellent care. If he did decide to use MAiD at any point... he would have to seek it out himself, apply and go though the qualification process.
