Silent Film Fridays is a streaming co-production with my daughter, Alex. As she and I are history nerds as well as film nerds, SFF is a labor of love as well as a tribute to a dear and absent friend. We feature silent films in the public domain, although (1/x thread)

Sometimes I forget just how many costumes I've made for my kids and just how often black sweatshirts came in clutch.

I've been refurbishing a 1920s leather satchel slowly over the course of nearly two years. Leather conditioner, learning about saddle stitching, and replacing the cloth liner by using the pieces to create a pattern. I'm about to assemble the new liner and it's incredible to see it come together.

Silent Film Fridays is off tonight due to Alex's work. Join us next week at 8pm Eastern for The Blue Bird (1918), won't you?

In an unexpected collision between past work and present occupation, I realised that I contributed features to the ASIFA's journal back in 2005 and 2007. The same International Animated Film Association that I now reference when I teach about animation beyond Hollywood. It's.....a little whiplash.

Thank goodness for small favors.
We are back. Our provider found and repaired a fiber issue last night and traffic has returned. We are sorry for the disruption.
The Wayback Machine, openlibrary.org, and some other archive.org functions are offline because some network gear has failed.

We apologize and are working on it. More as it happens.

This unhinged cartoon hit my radar thanks to fine folks at stream.place/pubtoons.com It's from the same animator that created The Cameraman's Revenge: Władysław Starewicz. Enjoy a little weird.

I just muttered to myself "No, that belongs in the Dank Memebrian" while sorting files for today's class on the history of memes.

Has something changed with Youtube and the ability to adjust video speeds? I can't change anything and I would appreciate insight if it's out there.

I've been asking students to analyze memes and write essays on them in context of audience, era of format, and concurrent events since fall 2017, apparently. This surfaced as I've been updating my lecture materials today.

I think I need to fall into a What's My Line? rabbit hole
There's a book dedicated to the 1950s TV quiz show What's My Line on archive.org ... it includes a list of all the programmes and 'professions' ... bit skeptical about 'cat's whisker crimper' as full-time employment, if I'm brutally honest.

I'm revising my lecture on memes and I really like how there's always something to learn about it.

Chicago Manual of Style arcana!

In my meeting with a student about to file his thesis, he told me he realized there's an asterisk to the idea that CMS 18 does away with place of publication.

It only does that if the book is post-1900!

Before that, you keep place & normally omit publisher!

Check in on your friends and family, and don't leave to tomorrow what you can do today.

Life is both beautiful and extremely hard for a lot of people. Maybe, just maybe, a gentle reminder that none of us are alone could make all of the difference xx

Be kind to yourselves, we're deserve it :) xx

Current question for which I'm chasing down answers: What on earth was going on in northern Wyoming at the turn of the 19th century?

NEW: The Trump administration’s slickly produced videos of an immigration raid at a Chicago apartment building in September showed federal agents rappelling from a helicopter and banging down doors.

These are the stories of the people who were inside.
