Map of property claims by Myra Clark Gaines, 1870. Her various court cases ran from 1834 to 1891 and included 17 appearances before the US Supreme Court. The whole story is richly bonkers and deserves a mini-series after they do one about Baroness Pontalba hnoc.org/publishing/f...

Believe it or not; 1890s-1900s, Illinois Central RR ran down Louisiana Ave from the River to Claiborne and was part of the NO Public Belt before that was rerouted and extended along the River up to Audubon Park and Old Jefferson

Frances Benjamin Johnston. I'm renting a furnished room here when I go back; 910 Orleans. At present, this old building has undergone terrible renovations

I'll prolly get this wrong, but the 2nd version of the original Orleans Ballroom (famous for subscription balls and alleged "Quadroon Balls"), first burnt down in 1816, used in later years by the catlicks, then partially demolished (thanks, Ricca) to be incorporated into the Bourbon Orleans Hotel

Speculative: possible area of raised ground resulting from Macarty 1816 Crevasse at Carrollton, shaded red. Overlain on pre-K LIDAR DEM

Old photo shortly before widening project. Front annex to DeSoto Hotel will be demolished and a new narrower addition with portico entrance constructed

Correction: I think the entire original 401 Poydras (original Mothers) was demolished and the business took over the former 415 Tchoupitoulas building, but transferred the 401 Poydras address to the 415 Tchoup building; based on 1950 Sanborn

Original Mother's early 1965, before widening of Poydras. "World's Best Baked Ham" sign and business was moved back as the front half of the building was demolished later in the year. That's why the facade of the building looks wrong today. Note WTC under construction

Boesch 1934 map excerpt showing filled areas at the Lakefront. Only Lake Vista ready for development, otherwise a significant Federal presence

There's a lot of boosterism displayed on this map published on the eve of the Civil War, particularly in the undeveloped lands north of Metairie Ridge. Note for example, the continuation of Esplanade and Canal out into the wild swamps of Jeff Parish

Less often reproduced N.O. map, Gardner, 1861, after 1852 annexation of 10th and 11th wards uptown (Lafayette)

Paved roads in red, 1918. Irish Channel, Carrollton, and Backatown mainly unpaved (note many of the streets shown by the lake and back of town were still notional (e.g. upper part of City Park was never carved up)
