1) mechanics and ludemes have inherent meaning
2) that meaning can be imbued upon mechanics from story/theme

Then there's the Touchstone - the character that grounds the detective. Patience has two - one for each of the Patners. Patience's carer, and Bea's son. And finally we have the Oddball, the characters that exist to do exposition but have a glint of character as well. That's him on the left.
