But in doing so, do we risk “objectively” providing poorly designed, cookie-cut, drab “anywhere” houses?
For all its difficulties & challenges, I always thought the ambition to deliver homes of “beauty” a worthy one.

It’s astonishing. I’d be very surprised if Salford University haven’t developed other buildings in last 8 years that makes you wonder whether this might have been utilised instead. Higher Education glossy developments seem to be an arms race of vanity projects.

What doesn’t add up is that by providing £500m for 5,000 new homes, then the 5 year rent settlement cannot deliver “tens of thousands” new homes- it’s still only 5,000!

Whilst fully agree- it’s nowhere the scale needed to match the lofty ambitions of 1.5m new homes in 5 years. But many Developing Social Landlords keen to get building again no matter.

Does feel like a significant gap between the rhetoric, size of the challenge & Chancellor’s room for manoeuvre. Need to be careful on balancing of promise / deliver scales.

And of course in any event is there enough industry capacity & funding to deliver on the overall numbers but especially on housing need. I’m not seeing the case being made to suggest there is.
