That's what this fellowship is all about. Equipping young leaders with the policy tools they need to be able to return to the region and contribute to policy change.

And so, I hope you'll consider supporting us in this work. We can't do it without you: givebutter.com/bassemsabry

I know that I wouldn't be here without Bassem Sabry.

And I know that our MENA region is filled with countless, brilliant young voices and that, in many cases, the only things they may be missing are access, network, or a platform.

And so when Bassem passed away at 31, @timep.bsky.social joined loved ones to honor one of the things that he held most dear: the potential of the next generation.

The fellowship that was created in his name has been running since 2014 and on Monday, we just welcomed our tenth fellow.

But Bassem wasn't a mentor figure to me alone. In his short life, he touched countless others.

He genuinely believed that young advocates had something to add, that they deserved a seat at the table, and that if they couldn't get one, they should be creating their own table.

But Bassem kept asking me why--gently coaching me until I finally did. He was the reason I published my first policy piece and the reason I continued.

His mentorship (and that of others like him) is what's kept me here. There's a throughline to where I'm at with @timep.bsky.social today.

Bassem started interacting with my tweets on Egypt, asking me questions, and engaging me in thoughtful DMs. One day, he inquired as to why I hadn't yet published my insights for a think tank.

"What would 22 year old me have to add to the discourse?" I wondered.

Fourteen years ago when I was first getting started in my policy career, I began tweeting about law in Egypt -- an area I didn't see getting much attention. Bassem Sabry, who I had never met but whose reputation for pristine policy analysis preceded him, came across my tweets.

Bassem Sabry believed in the power of young voices from and in the MENA region in making policy change. In April 2014, we lost Bassem too soon.

@timep.bsky.social is proud to have come together with Bassem's loved ones to establish a fellowship in his name that gives life to his vision.

TIMEP’s Bassem Sabry Fellows emerge from the program as well-trained, well-networked, and well-resourced young leaders who are better positioned to return to the MENA region to give back to it and pursue meaningful change.

On Monday, TIMEP welcomed our tenth Bassem Sabry Fellow.
