Going to be cheeky and add one more to this excellent list.

Finally, from The Stranger, I'm going with the Rat Catcher.

I loved creating social outsiders, and the Rat Catcher is one of a few of our characters featuring a dog. That's it, that's the reason!

This was REALLY fun! Thank you for the question :)

For The Mind, I'm choosing the Alchemist.

The Mind was tough to design, as formal education is reserved for the rich in Gallows Corner. But we have street lawyers, alehouse philosophers, hedge astrologers, and wild man alchemists who have huffed too many of their own fumes.

What's not to love?!

For The Masque, I'm choosing the Fool!

This is a really hard one, as I think each and every Job is excellent here, but the Fool takes it just because I think the artwork is extraordinary.

For The Market I'm choosing the Smith.

This was the first Job I created for GC and was the first piece of artwork Joel did beyond the big banner piece. I was obsessed from the start.

I also love that the Smith doesn't just mean a blacksmith, but could be a seamstress or other creative job, too!

From The Hood, I LOVE the Burglar.

Among the criminal class in Gallows Corner, Burglars are perhaps the most obvious and straightforward: they stake out houses and businesses and then find their ways in.

But artwork wise, I am just obsessed with that cape.

From The Flesh, I love the Midwife.

First of all, its definitely not a character type you'd normally associate with this type of game or its purpose, so I love the role they can play in subverting expectations and being advocates for women and children.

Second, that angry baby face.

From The Earth, my favourite pick is the Marshman.

Essex, where I grew up, has a long coast. In the north, it's lovely sandy beaches, but near me, from the middle of the county down to the Thames Estuary, it's all saltmarshes.

They feature in every game I make. I love them!

Oh I ABSOLUTELY do!

So the 48 Jobs you can choose from are each linked to one of the 8 Trades, so you can't go selecting new combos, but I will absolutely share with you my favourite Job from each of the 8 Trades.

Let's get a thread going, starting with my favourite from The Body: Pugilist.

(Please repost!) Remember, remember the fifth of November...

Today is Guy Fawkes Night in the UK, so I figured it was a perfect time to do a GALLOWS CORNER ASK ME ANYTHING!

I'm George, the game's creator and designer, and I want to answer your questions about GALLOWS CORNER! 🧵

What is GALLOWS CORNER?

A rules-light, narrative first system that puts players in the role of peasants and the working classes in late 14th century post-plague England. Become an outlaw and liberate England from crown, church, and nobility!

In Mappa Mundi, my first major design project, travel and exploration are vital, and facilitated by the Journey Deck system, but actual places are relatively abstracted.

In Gallows Corner, the crown's power (known as Control) is spatially determined. It is linked to places and spaces.
October 10, 2025 at 10:04 AM
Instead, as characters gain Influence -- through taking the fight to the crown, liberating areas of the country, and HELPING people -- they start to attract followers.

If a follower is recruited, they become a RETAINER, who is a full character in their own right, with dice, trade, job, and skills.
October 10, 2025 at 10:04 AM
Both!

You gain Expertise (again, a system I used in Mappa Mundi and have adapted here) each time you roll with your JOB dice.

You then gain Training by spending an Opportunity to study with an NPC who works in that Job.

When both are done, you can upgrade your JOB dice or learn a new Skill.
October 8, 2025 at 1:21 PM
In this way, your character IS what they DO and WHO they ARE.

A character is a marriage of their life experiences and their professional achievements.

A smart but cold Assassin? Check. An emotional but foolish Burglar? Check!

We see, then, the link between the Dice Pool and Trades + Jobs mechanics.

Let's look at an example Test and how the mechanics pull together.

Pictured here is the Mummer Job from The Masque Trade.
October 8, 2025 at 9:58 AM
With the Trade selected, the player then selects one of that Trade's six Jobs.

From THE MASQUE, for example, the player can choose from CON ARTIST, FOOL, FORTUNE TELLER, MINSTREL, MUMMER, and MUSICIAN.

With Job picked, the player gains a Job (JOB) dice and unlocks one of four Skills.
October 8, 2025 at 9:58 AM
In Gallows Corner, your character IS what they DO. Their Trade is a broad indicator of HOW they work -- The Body, The Earth, The Flesh, The Hood, The Market, The Mind, The Masque, The Stranger.

When choosing a Trade, the player gains a Trade (TRA) dice, beginning with a D6.
October 8, 2025 at 9:58 AM
First: Dice Pool!

Characters have just three Attributes: Physical, Emotional, and Intellectual.

Start with two D6s and a D8 (EXP, or Experience, dice). Assign a dice to each Attribute.

To make a Test: pick one (usually) or more (sometimes) of these EXP dice to start forming your dice pool.

There we have it: a brief overview of the England of Gallows Corner. A land where commons clash, nobles oppress, and the Anarchy spreads in the margins, offering freedom and food to those who would see a better world, a different world.
October 6, 2025 at 9:43 AM
You'll find allies and assistance at every stage of your journey.

From the players around the table with you to the members of the Retinue you will build as you gain in influence and notoriety, England's commons are as keen as you to lift themselves from the mud and bring down the hollow crown.
