Analysing Munster and Irish Rugby.
McCarthy got a right doing for other reasons, mainly inexperience I would say but he at least looked legal for most of the scrums he faced where I could see him.

And the fact that it's a multi-faceted battle.

But start at Elbow Down and you'll usually be on the right track.

The biggest refereeing cue in the modern scrum is "elbow down", especially on the loosehead side.

You see players pointing this out constantly when a scrum goes down.

On Saturday, the Boks scrummaged elbow up and out on almost every engage. Porter didn't. Paddy McCarthy did.

#10 discourse is a sideshow. The pack needs huge work. Less "who would you drop" and more "who can we give a chance to".

Our defence was good, but it's always pretty good. We did well to stay in the fight. But, for me, this was a performance that we'll look back on in March and see the signs were there that something isn't right.

We were down to 12 men because they were beating us up in almost every facet.

The kicking game produced very few positive outcomes. Did we clear the ball to touch well? Yes.

Did our contestables force any attacking transitions or create usable set-piece platforms? No.

Exactly what England and France will try to do in the Six Nations, along with Wales and Italy.

(Gregor Townsend will try some mad shit inversion of this that won't work.)

Worse again, this confirms the All Blacks template from Chicago. Kick everything, use that energy saving in the forwards for the scrum & lineout, defensive lineout in particular.

If you can win just over half of Ireland's contestables, most of the threat is contained.

We were reduced to hoying long passes out to the wing.

Watched the game back just now and feel a little queasy after it. The Boks were so focused on beating us up they left the guts of three more tries out there.

Ireland barely laid a glove on them. Not in their weight class.

Tighthead. 6'4", coming up on 120kg and a proper bruiser, with the mentality to match.

Too late in the day at this point, but keep an eye on Jamie Conway in the Irish 20s
