Herb Pennock (241-162, 3.60 ERA, 1,227 strikeouts), of the Athletics, Red Sox, and Yankees, one of the greatest southpaws ever, died of a brain hemorrhage on January 30, 1948. He was just 53. Later that year, he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
