Half the breeding population of Elephant Seals on South Georgia lost to H5N1 (bird flu). The impact this will have on the species, the local food web, and even ocean fertilization is hard to comprehend.

Great debate on deep sea mining
Pro: Oliver Gunasekara - Impossible Metals
•$1T Industry
•High Grade Metals
•Wrestle control from China

Contra: Victor Vescovo
•Environmental damage not worth it
•Tech changing away from Co/Ni
•Unproven/unbuilt mining tech
•Economics not what they seem to be

On Sunday, 68 cyclists from Bryan-College Station participated in our annual Cranksgiving event, rode about 10mi to 4 stores (& a bike polo photo stop), & bought food to donate to our local Food Bank.
We just learned from the Food Bank that we collected 1350 lbs of food and other items!!! @kbtx.com

That's what it looks like when the drill string re-enters the hole. Controlled from the bridge, a camera/sonar is used to find the funnel in the deep sea, before the ship moves into position & the hole is re-occupied.
Kinda like threading a needle on 5th Ave from the top of Empire State Building.

The splash you see when opening the website? A free fall funnel hitting the ocean through the ship's moon pool. These funnels are used when a hole is drilled to a significant depth but the vessel has to abandon site. Once the ship returns, the drill string can reenter the hole through the funnel.

Looking for some pictures of different drill vessels for our new department homepage, I came upon some from a while ago. They might look unassuming, but without these cable laying vessels, our modern way of living would be unthinkable.

At our annual Cranksgiving event 68 cyclists -4yrs to >65yrs- raced 10 miles across town to multiple grocery stores and got items to donate to the local Food Bank. Pretty sure that we reached >1000lbs for the first time, and got a $1k donation! This year more important than ever.

And we’re up and running. First Antarctic cores have been CT scanned! The GCR has truly become a world-class core analysis facility!

Looks like the Gulf Coast Repository @tamu.bsky.social is getting a new "toy" today.
So exciting, can't wait to see it up and running!

You might not think about the Ocean as much as we marine scientists do, but our modern life is enabled by the deep sea. Whether we're watching TikToks, Bluesky, streaming, video call across the globe or get the latest NYT recipe, most of our data are routed through cables on/in the seafloor.

With flights being cancelled all across the country one can only dream how it would be if we would have a decent high speed train network. At times the TSA lines at IAH were twice the time it would take the proposed Shinkansen-style train from Houston to Dallas.

Reminds me of the famous (infamous?) weighing club on R/V Polarstern where the pilots always pay close attention that no one who’s scheduled on a helo-flight exceeds the safety weight limit.

Nothing to see here, literally! Just 6ft me standing, you read that right, standing upright in front of a truck.

Few yrs ago, approaching the Antarctic Amundsen Sea, we encountered a giant "pumpkin" bobbing in the waves. As we always try to collect trash, we stopped & hauled it aboard. Turned out it was a Chinese buoy that was lost in Prydz Bay, on the other side of the continent, 5yrs before!
Happy Halloween!

Just wow! @esaearth.esa.int's Sentinel-2 satellite took this unbelievable image of Cat 5 Hurricane #Melissa during landfall. Look at these details!
Melissa is one of only seven sub-900mb Atlantic hurricanes on record, four of which occurred in the past 20 years!
October 29, 2025 at 2:08 PM
Hurricane Melissa has developed into a Category 4 hurricane, maximum sustained winds have increased to 140 mph (220 km/h) according to the NHC. Just look at the size of that thing S of Jamaica. Hope people can stay safe.

Just began @peterbrannen.bsky.social's new book and already came across this gem 🤌 „If you really wanna have good fun, be a geologist. Geologists often know 2 or 3 languages and they always know the best places to drink.“ followed by a shout-out to IODP, the JR, and Exp399. Promising start!

How cool is this? A LEGO Argo Float! Thanks for the inspo @mbarinews.bsky.social! "Treated" everyone in the brick store to a 5min ad-hoc talk why Argo Floats are so cool and important. Shouldn't have asked what I'm building 🙃

Cool new Exp382 study out in @natcomms.nature.com showing an extreme poleward shift of ACC during the last interglacial.
The coolest thing is that it confirms our 2024 results using fast and non-destructive XRF. 🤩

For me that's one of the most powerful pics of what sea level rise means and should be a warning to us. There are the remains of terrestrial ecosystems on what's now the bottom of the sea. I once got a baby mammoth tooth from a fisherman who pulled it up from the bottom of the N. Sea.

Back from a 105mi bike race through the TX Hill Country where the July floods caused unspeakable devastation (race fees went to flood relief). It's hard to directly attribute specific rain events to climate change, but we know that storms like these become more likely as CC worsens.
