I had the same experience with my grandmother. My theory was that suddenly she had to interact with lots of kind, hardworking non-white people and realised they were alright actually.

There was a judge at Lambeth County Court who would often ask as you were walking in: “Rent? Arrears? Order?” He could often dispose of the case without you sitting down.
