the very organisms that drive deep-sea carbonate burial—plankton and other calcifying species—are themselves increasingly threatened by acidifying oceans and continued CO₂ emissions. Any potential stabilizing effect would therefore come only after severe and irreversible ecological loss…(1000s a)

🆕'Breaking the Plastic Wave' report is out, concluding that without ambituous systemic measures #plastic pollution will double until 2040 equivalent to dumping nearly a 🛻 garbage truck worth of plastic waste every second since, growing twice as fast as waste management.

#scientists4future

New study from our MICROFATE expedition that crossed the North #Pacific in 2019 finds high #microplastic levels in the water column (8-2600 items m–3) & in sediments (1100-3200 items kg–1), mostly very small particles (<20um) and surprisingly high levels at >5000m depth.

Here in CO₂ equivalents (transliterating atmospheric concentration changes of other greenhouse gases to an equivalent CO₂ concentration change).

This makes it look even more steep, as the CO₂ forcing is logarithmic, increasing by about 4 W/m² for every doubling of the concentration.

The problem with forcing based estimates, is that this doesn't take into account the recent aerosol forcing increase.

The IPCC methodology assumes natural aerosols from e.g. forest fires are anthropogenic (but their CO₂ isn't..).

It's been quite something to see one of the world's leading climate scientists, James Hansen, being vilified the past years for presenting data showing the rapid acceleration of global and regional warming, associated with continued greenhouse gas emissions and rapid reduction of air pollution.
