Usually from underground, like the funnelweb, but it is ludicrously easy to abvoid ever seeing a spider. It's hilarious how much yanks think they are a constant hazard lol

Lol. People really believe the spider thing, even though it is no different to anywhere else.

I was a big John Wyndham fan at that age. The Crysalids, Tripods, etc.

John Marsdens Tomorrow When The War Began isn't magical, but is a very fun bit of speculative fiction. I loved imagining myself in Ellies world. Otherwise, I always recommend Garth Nix, Ben Aaronovitch, and Diana Wynne Jones...

Oh no!

Hope he gets the help he needs. Poor sod!

Oh, how cute!

Looks like Wedgie had a late night, and is still a bit bleary.

With any luck we can start putting a more appropriate limit on how many guns one person really should be allowed to be licenced to have....

Interesting the car bombs were removed without going off. Well done those people who managed to disarm them.

Only if you are American, unfortunately. Good book though.

They're already talking about how it is all because we have recognised Palestine, which it obviously isn't.

Religious groups having random religious events interrupted by violence on the beach aside, still it is nice our gun rules mean they didn't have as much gun as they could have had in the US.

It's an education researching what you are talking about each time, that much is certain. "I learned it after a CD post" should be a curriculum dot point...

No idea, but probably. It is spelled like half a dozen ways, but not with a C, far as I have ever seen.

A kay-li is also a party in some areas (of Australia, at least) and thus you did not drink alone, or quietly.
December 14, 2025 at 6:16 PM
I have never been to that city.

My immediate reaction as an Aussie was to say "get close to a train station if you can", which the light rail seems to be covering?

enjoying your tin foil hat, ye cooker?

It has some pretty damn harsh weather, trees would help make it more survivable. Pity they seem ti be slowly limiting thdm to the arboretum.
December 14, 2025 at 6:02 AM
Yeah, our trees don't tend to loose leaves in winter, here in Australia, so the native and not-so-native mistletoes are less easy to see, but they're still there if you look for them. We've got over 100 native species.

I love that they fake out the leaves of their host tree, as much as they can.
December 14, 2025 at 12:08 AM
Native or not, it's been spread even to Australia and other places. There are many many species of mistletoe. It has sticky white fruit with seeds that get spread by birds pretty much around the world.

Also a Dixie, in that context, was a type of icecream, sold in a cup. There also might be a dixie bugler who plays for a military?

We learn American history, it's under the heading of modern history. American history is mostly the history of slavery, emancipation, and extremist religious stuff.

I was under the impression it was an imaginary border from a war, akin to the Brisbane Line (an imaginary line proposed for a fallback if Australia was invaded). I was under the impression it was now used as a fast food border for something called Waffle House, similar to the Red Rooster Line.

I mean, he would have to give away his billions to be a millionaire instead of a billionaire, so perhaps what they are saying is that he will develop some goddamn compassion. So yes, should definitely drop a few billionaires that way & wait for them to ditch their billions for the sake of humanity.

Looks more like a paddock than a forest. Who are they?
December 13, 2025 at 10:16 PM
We were always mystified by "prune juice" on Star Trek. Prunes are just dried stonefruit, we were unsure how you juiced a dry fruit. It seemed like a weird future sci fi thing. Odd to think it was real.

How did they juice a dried fruit?

He had a documentary made about how gifted he is and how everything he does is "amazing" and "spectacular" etc. Everyone of my fathers generation saw the film, it was on public broadcast tv repeatedly. They all believed it.
