On this day (November 21st) 21 years ago, we were all introduced to the dual-screened wonder that is the Nintendo DS!

With a library of close to 3,500 games, 4 different model designs, and so many system variants across those designs, its two screens ushered in a whole new era for Nintendo.

Thank you all for bringing the THIRD PILLAR YouTube channel up to 50 subscribers strong! 🎊

Of course, there's more to come soon - just been recording more DS game footage, looking back at certain scripts, and getting advice from fellow creators.

To be honest, I thought it was fake... but it's a legitimate game that came out in 2007. 😅

Third pillar.
Weird two-screened thingy.
The PSP's bitch.
Nintendo's last gasp.
The little handheld that could.
It prints money.
Even your grandma has one.
Remade gaming in its image.
The granddaddy of mobile.
The hottest portable game system in the world.

Happy 20th anniversary, Nintendo DS.

Still not a fan of yet another DS retrospective slagging the original NTR-001 model and praising the Lite. 😑

Progress!!!

The "Touching is Good" campaign lasted for the lifecycle of the original NTR-001 DS model (2004-2006), being promoted with commercials, print ads, and more.

The range was truly something to behold... any specifics you remember from that era? 😄

Metroid Prime Pinball is also touted in its descriptions as featuring "the world's first simultaneous 8-player game play on the DS" with the wireless mission mode.

It does beat Mario Kart DS (which does the same on DS Download Play) by about three weeks, so the claim is valid!

19 years ago today (10/24), Samus Aran would once again take up residence on #NintendoDS... but with quite the twist.

Fuse Games would get the rare second-chance to turn a Nintendo property into a video pinball game, and hence, Metroid Prime Pinball was born!

Hello, new Bluesky denizens!

If you love the #NintendoDS as much as we do, then definitely keep an eye on this space!

19 years ago today (10/4), Soma Cruz arrived on #NintendoDS in Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow.

The Magic Seal system is usually seen as Dawn's most divisive mechanic, and it "made [Shutaro Iida, Dawn's programmer] suffer the most" in development, which Iida revealed in a 2021 AMA.

17 years ago today (10/2), Chibi-Robo made their #NintendoDS debut in Chibi-Robo!: Park Patrol.

Going from household cleanup to gardening and environmental maintenance is quite a leap for our 4-inch tall dynamo, but above all else, spreading happiness is its #1 goal!

17 years ago today (10/1), Link debuted on the #NintendoDS with the release of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass!

With the power of touch, Link swipes into combat, makes notes on their maps, controls the S.S. Linebeck, and more on their search for the Ghost Ship!

The prominent song lyric in the CM tying it to the #NintendoDS is "I still remember the ways that you touched me", though another lyric in Easy Breezy garnered a tiny bit of controversy.

Utada sings "You're easy breezy and I'm Japaneesy", which didn't sit too well with a few people. 😅

Of course, this is a direct reference to the 1982 hit, "867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone!

A very common example sequence, though in this case, it is a few characters short. A WEP key is usually 10 (or 26) hexadecimal characters in length.

Jenny needs just a few more digits...

In the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection DS instruction booklet, there's a nice lil' visual joke that you probably saw and chuckled at a bit.

On page 12, they show where to input details for an access point's SSID and WEP key. The number sequence they use as the passcode? 8675309.

You can see the E3 2004's platinum silver finish in these photos, and also... swapped power & start/select button positions? 🤨

Looks like it was a little revision made between E3 2004 and the full launch on November 21, 2004... among other changes, of course.

Before the NTR-001 retail model, we had the chunkier Nintendo DS prototype model!

Photographed by Evan Amos of Vanamo Media, this glossy white/grey prototype was sent to the FCC by Nintendo to get its filings prior to release.

This model is also slightly revised from what was shown at E3 2004.
