authoritarians, fascists, tech companies, corporations, they all want desperately to produce illiteracy. and that is what they are doing at scale. literacy, in its broadest definition, is a threat to power and they know that.

well, it is my dream to one day offer it (though I couldn't do it for free in THIS economy, alas)

it's truly hard to know what to do when all these huge systemic forces are arrayed against us and we get fifteen weeks in intro composition class to try to turn it all around (while our institutions work aggressively against us on many fronts). every teacher I talk to is burned out or burning out.

BUT they've upped the cap in this required class from 18 to 20 and now to 22 in recent years, and EACH TIME they cram more students in the fail rate goes up significantly. but they think they're saving money somehow

at my school we're pressured not to fail students especially in the required first-year writing class, because then the college needs to offer more first-year writing classes so they can take it again. this seems like a class that they'd want well-resourced, doesn't it?
