ANNA'S EDITORIAL CAPACITY:

I am currently fully-booked for editorial clients for 2026.

That said, my FTC employment runs out on 17 January, so if they decide not to renew my contract, I will have extra capacity early next year.
I'll update as soon as I know. Thanks.

I've worked on 8 editorial projects this year, both novels and novellas at developmental and copy/line.
Finishing up the last two over the next 6 weeks and then taking a break until next year.
It's been brilliant to be so busy and work with so many talented authors, but I need a rest.
Like Bailey!

How are you spending your Friday afternoon? I'm #editing. I sometimes worry about the strange and eclectic knowledge I've learned over the years. Still, better that it's in my brain than my search history, I guess... ~ Anna

Sometimes my editorial notes are detailed, and sometimes they're just this. Both serve their purpose for the writer, I think, because entertaining your editor is always a good sign ~ Anna

With 10 days to go until @jessicaamcminn.bsky.social new novella is out, she was kind enough to give a brief overview of her editing experience with us.
Looking forward to the next one, Jess. ~ Anna

I love editing. Anna

This is so true and I’ve really noticed this while working with clients. Stuff I just do instinctively and wasn’t consciously aware of has to become concrete so I can explain it to someone else. And it makes me more aware of my own writing craft. I’m learning too!

The usual response I get to an Example Edit is: "It took me a minute to get over the sting, but then it was incredibly helpful."

And I'm now offering a free 1-hour mentoring call after each edit. Are you ready to improve your first drafts and self-editing? Come talk to me. 🔗 👇

It doesn't matter how much film and TV technology advances, this will remain one of the most iconic images of modern movie making: the Charge of the Rohirrim at the Pelennor Fields. But why? A short thread 1.

2/ You want readers watching a movie in their heads, immersed in each scene, not thinking about the words on the page. The less they're even aware that they're reading, the better.

Two pieces of advice I find myself repeating to all my clients:

1/ Your plot has to be engaging, but the thing that will keep readers desperate to pick up your book whenever they have a minute is to spend time hanging out with characters they love.

In today's #grammar errors, do you need to actually be ON the skateboard to do your job? Grinding rails while typing? That seems ... complicated and dangerous? ~ Anna

Congratulations to proofreading client Rick Brindle on publication of Sister Alex, a post-apocalyptic novel set in England. It's currently free for a limited time on Kindle:

I talk about this a lot with clients. You never want your reader conscious that they're reading, you want them engrossed in the story, watching it play in their head. Good editing makes your writing flow, so your readers stay absorbed in the magic.

Next up in common errors we see in manuscripts is the rise of "Should of," which I think has risen from spoken British English. Is getting more commonplace these days.

As editors and proofreaders, we often see words used incorrectly, and this can sometimes be down to how the writer grew up hearing them pronounced and internalised that spelling. The spelling itself is correct, but the word is not. Slither/sliver is a very common one! #writingcraft #writingtips

I've just checked my Word settings, and it was indeed defaulted to 'on', so if that's your preferred writing system, do check to stop it using your work to so-called 'train' so-called 'AI'~ Anna

A local (to me) dog trainer posted that if your pet is afraid of fireworks this bonfire night, that instead of playing classical or calming music, go on YouTube and play taiko drum music, loudly. It makes it harder for animals to hear fireworks over the drums.
Not perfect, but an improvement ~ Anna
