Interests include content moderation/T&S/platforms, internet culture, buildings/infrastructure/transit, politics, elections, and maps. Oh, and volleyball.
I know, but you are very well-exposed to the English-speaking part of the internet.

I guess that's why you sound like you've lived in the United States for a couple of years? Because I sorta just assumed you did.

I guess you and @mmasnick.bsky.social both fall into the category of "Not a lawyer/law school grad, but might as well be".

I think 18 was chosen as it's approximately the age when puberty ends for most people. It also happens to be when most people finish high school. Of course these happen at 17 or 19 for some people (and then there's also the outliers), but it works as an approximation.

If Cadillac Fairview would pony up the cash, we could have "Eaton Centre-TMU".

Was it? It was obviously socially unacceptable, but people wanted the age of consent raised for a reason (I remember being suprised that some of the strongest supporters were teenagers themselves, who were happy that the government was doing something to protect them from predators).

IIRC the opposition parties had some concerns, but it was tied to one of Harper's "omnibus" crime bills and made a confidence vote, and no one wanted to bring down the government over the age of consent.

Wait, "open revolt"... was this related to the Poster's Strike @rahaeli.bsky.social ?
November 17, 2025 at 3:42 PM
I suppose it's the scale of it that was revolutionary then. Six Degrees was never as big or ubiquitous as FB was, nor did it (afaik) trigger the level of Discourse about whether it was appropriate to friend request/message someone

Once again I'm struggling to remember what this incident was
November 17, 2025 at 3:16 PM
For example, it eliminated a lot of the drama around asking a girl/guy for their number, because you can simply friend request them on fb instead.
November 17, 2025 at 2:30 AM
The revolutionary thing about FB was their "real name" policy, which meant that simply knowing someone's name essentially gave you their contact info and opened up many possibilities
November 17, 2025 at 2:29 AM
True, but the concept of Facebook really was revolutionary imo

"Even worse than it is in this one."

Is such a thing possible?
November 17, 2025 at 12:16 AM
Something involving Singal, I think
November 15, 2025 at 2:40 PM
aww I hope you feel better soon!
November 15, 2025 at 1:24 PM
I hope it's not too bad!

(At least you can get a lot of research done!)
November 15, 2025 at 12:48 PM
I would love to read it, but of course that's something for the website is it?
November 15, 2025 at 12:42 PM
(BTW I just woke up. You good, rah, or is this another one of your infamous fucked up sleep days and we should all yell at you to go to sleep?)
November 15, 2025 at 12:35 PM
Link is really the one notable exception to Bsky's "we only permaban as a last resort" policy (and Bill Kezos, but that one's more debatable).

IMO perhaps there should be something between like a 30-day ban and a permaban. Like 6 months, 1 year, 2 years. Hell maybe even 5 or 10 years.
November 15, 2025 at 12:32 PM
There's probably a thread on this somewhere on Twitter.

(And I'm glad you're writing so much about T&S tonight. I'm assuming it means your body isn't giving you *too* much shit right now)

Eh I just think he's even more of an idealist than I am, and we like to dream.

(By the way, what are your thoughts on the Santa Clara Principles?)
November 15, 2025 at 5:43 AM
This is why I'm hoping composable choose-your-own moderation would reduce the need for enforcement at the platform level. I know you said it was a shitshow (although I only have a vague idea how), but I've always regarded Bluesky as being an experiment at creating a new type of social network.
November 15, 2025 at 5:04 AM
I would say it's more important than "There is some use", but otherwise yeah.
