Season 2 is a massive upgrade on 1 but when Piller takes over, it's a whole new show. Feels like it leaps forwards about a decade.

I watched Encounter at Farpoint recently. It's awful. Just so thin. As you say, de Lancie is great. The sets are nice... but some of the cast are actively bad and their actions make no sense.

My god, that feels like an argument from about 15 years ago

The drama of getting the change in a stressful situation, the sheer visibility of being in a glass box. It's all excellent. Now you have to push a virtual button to hang up. It's almost embarrassing.
