No NPCs seem to ever emote, which seems somewhat criminal. Even comparing that vid of character emotes I posted above, it's stiff. For something that's trying as hard as it is to ape the aesthetics of the pixel games of the SNES/PSX era, I think people forget how emotive/cartoony those games were.

Just pulling out this a bit, but the sprites really are very stiff. Your main character does have one of three little personality flourishes they can do - but it's not like it's a narrative animation used to emote in response to story beats, it's a single animation, used every time you engage an NPC

amusing that one of the first things you can do in Octopath 0 is buy some candy off a village child, and if you want you can bully her with 100% success rate to half price
