Can’t say I enjoyed the full winter experience in Montreal this week, but was great to hang with Professors @eidlin.bsky.social and
Dalia Gesualdi-Fecteau and talk about labour law and other less work-y stuff.

Fun to be back in MTL!

Oh sure I’ve been cited by Supreme Court of Canada and other Canadian courts, but now that I’ve been cited by the Appellant Division of the Caribbean Court of Justice I can retire.

Thanks everyone and have a nice life.

Submitted second grant application today, two grants for two entirely different projects. A LOT of work.

But I can finally get to the pile of other work waiting for me, including a new book on collective bargaining and law.

First tho, a new cliff scape painting. Layers 1-4 of probably 20!

Had the funnest time at #DwayneGretzky tonight in Ontario’s coolest locale, #PrinceEdwardCounty.

This band is life affirming among all the hate out there. Go see them if you get a chance.

Here’s the most important measure of Ontario’s self proclaimed « working for workers » Conservative government.

They pretend that laws requiring employers to draft policies about this or that is progress.

But real measure is enforcement of labour standards.

My 96 year old mom with the punk coloured hair meets Walter Mittens (who seems a little confused with what’s going on).

I’m taking my talents to McGill Law School in Montreal to talk on a panel cutely named The Empire Strikes Back.

We’ll be talking about Canadian governments’ concerning recent activist approach to interfering in collective bargaining rights.

November 10 if you are in town.

Great, just what we need, our own little Project 2025.

More private health care and public funding for religious and independent schools? Talk about out of touch.

Don’t agree with Doug Ford on much, but he’s right to shut down this nonsense.

Article says that employers must provide “reasonable notice” before telling an employee to change work locations.

I’m not aware of such a requirement, unless the idea is that you are terminating the contract and then offering a new one in a different location?

Reminds me of the time, in 1939, that Supreme Court of Canada chastised Mr Christie for persisting in complaining about being denied a beer because he was black.

After all, the servers were polite in their racism, so what’s the problem. The SCC ruled the bar could be racist.

The comment by the employment lawyer in the story is simply wrong as a matter of labour law. The U of T profs are in an association that has a MOA similar to a collective agreement that has an “academic freedom” protection and a grievance procedure. U of T cannot terminate a prof “for any reason”.

This week’s Long Saturday Walk TM was a special treat, through my favorite park, the wild Hamstead Heath in North London.

Turned into a 16 km doozy.

Made it to Oxford, where in typical fashion it is pouring. But it’s still beautiful.

Thanks to Prof Anne Davies for putting me up at the ridiculously beautiful Brasenose College. Did the obligatory walk to Hogwarts this morning.

Also, our latest collaboration is about to be punished in the Industrial Law Journal, called “What is Human Resources Law?”.

Returned to the London School of Economics with my comrade in arms Prof Ruth Dukes today, where we both did grad studies more years ago than we want to mention!

Ruth is also the proud recipient of rare and priceless Law of Work swag.

Labour Law Exam:

If it’s true that Air Canada flight attendants earn less than the minimum wage when you include unpaid work, why can’t they just file complaints under the Canada Labour Code for violations of the minimum wage laws?
