Bird strikes, alongside free-ranging cats, are enormous problems for bird conservation. These account for 1-5 billion bird deaths annually in North America from a total population of ~10-20 billion songbirds. Big part of the reason why songbirds are declining.

There are many different solutions available at modest cost (<<1% of overall construction budget): fritted windows; uv markers (birds see it, we don't); films. Some are coupled to increased energy efficiency. And there is much good science on this -- e.g., www.muhlenberg.edu/media/conten...

Agreed. This would be evidence-based decision making. The proposal here (Winnipeg) is to eliminate all bylaws concerning bird-friendly practices because builders complained it raises costs for new construction. But the costs are trivial. They just don't want to be bothered with it.

I cheat a little bit. I built about a dozen nest boxes for tree swallows on our property at Lake Manitoba. Part of the deal is that they have to pose for pics for me.
